Matt Kerby and Greg Buck are on their way to Victoria for the big meet which starts tomorrow. The duo booked - their. berths with convincing victories in the Feb. 12 zones,. but coach Joe Murphy says they are under no il- lusions as to what*s waiting for them. Kerby and Buck have both achieved a level. of - expertise which will make them competi- tive in Victoria, he said. - However, they were both going fo need every ounce of it in what. is obviously the toughest compe- tition on the calendar. “There'll be a lot more pressure than they’re used to Up eres”? seuss oun vevee Murphy. “When they get to that level, it’s a maller of the draw they get and how mentally prepared they are,”’ Murphy explained, That mental side of the compe- tition means dealing with the very different atmosphere they7ll walk into. “The stands will be packed and fhere’ll be a lot more pressure {han they’re used to up here,’ Murphy said, Kerby got a confidence booster at. the provincial age group championships where he silyered. in his division. Buck missed the medals but his critical losses were ‘‘vyery, very close’’ and against exiremely lough opponents, Murphy: noted. He also pointed out any success the pair achieve this year will, in asense, be a bonus. Both are still in grade 11, he ex- plained, so still have another shot in 1995. “This is the crucial year for them to experience what it’s like. The ultimate goal is the provin- cial championship in their grade 12 year,’ Murphy added. @ ice double RETURNING from the Northern B.C.
