They continue on despite a Jife- altering injury, in the face of people...who . don’t. understand. ..[os them: orwhat has happened tO them. October is Head Injury/Brain Injury Awareness Month. What is traumatic brain in- jury or a head injury? A head injury is a traumatic in- sult to the brain. Not always visible, it may cause physical, in- tcllectual, emotional, social and vocational changes. These changes affect not only the present but future status of an individual. Frequently it means that the same person, as you know him, may never be quite the same, We often refer to this popula- tion as the “walking wounded”’, because although no visible damage is noted, the psychologi- cal and intellectual consequences of TBI can be devastating to that persan and to those who love him or her. What are the symptoms of traumatic brain injury? Symptoms can vary greatly and are unique, depending on the ex- tent and location of the brain in- jury. Physical disabilitics, im- paired learning ability and per- sonality changes are common. Physical impairments include speech, vision, hearing and other sensory impairments, headaches, lack of coordination, spasticity of muscles, paral ysis of one or both sides, and scizure disorders. Cognitive impairments include memory deficits, short and: long lerm concentration, slowness of thinking, attention, perception, communication, reading and wril- ing skills, planning, sequencing and judgment. Psych-social-behavioural- emotional impairments include fatigue, mood swings, denial, self-centredness, anxicty, depres- — sion, lowered sclf esteem, sexual dysfunction, restlessness, ‘ack of motivation, inability to self- monitor, difficulty with emotional control, inabilily to cope, agita- tion, excessive laughing or crying and difficulty In relating. to others, When do we know how serious the traumatic brain in- jury is? Usually it is difficult to predict the outcome of TBI during the first hours, days or weeks. In fact the outcome may remain unknown for many months or years, Tt is very difficult when a physician says that.we just have to walt and sec, but ofien ‘this is the most accurate answer. “Here ’n | There”’ by Yvonne Moen of Nanao with the Takashima family and his visits to the an- cient temples, art gallerics, wed- ding palace, Ishikawa Industrial Rescarch Centre, museums, Geisha ‘tea houses, samurai houses, silk-dying workshop and museum and the famous Ken- rokucn Gardens.
