2nd Issue Oct., 1965 The CTV network of pri- vate stations rejected a TV “commercial” prepared for use in the election campaign. Federal New Democratic President Eamon Park charg- ed that pressure was brought to bear on the network to cancel the one-minute spot because the election adver- tisement attacked misleading advertising. Introducing the commercial were camera shots of a sup- posedly new detergent Biff Bam. A housewife was dis- appointed that it wasn’t doing the job advertised. The script ran Tike this: “Remember the night you were watching TV and you saw a commercial for a new detergent or something? And the announcer was so con- vincing that you went out and bought it? And then you tried it and tried it and it just wouldn’t do the job they promised it would? . . . ‘Heav- ens, there ought to be a law to protect the consumer against misleading advertis- ing, false packaging and un- fulfilled promises.’ Well, mad- am, we agree with you—there ought to be a law and there will be when you have a New Democratic government in Ottawa...” Original objection to the commercial came from the network’s Vancouver station CHAN-TV, but defense of the network’s action was made by its vice-president in charge of programing and sales Michael Hind-Smith. The CTV VP. said the ad was rejected be- cause “its substance consti- tutes an indiscriminate and unsupported attack on all tele- vision commercial advertis- ing.” NDP President Park de- fended the TV spot as a legiti- mate criticism of present-day commercial practices. “Its message can be substantiated by any housewife dealing with any supermarket or store.” In the meantime the Biff Bam story was getting wide- spread newspaper coverage led by Toronto’s Globe and Mail and Daily Star both with. front-page accounts including the message itself. a consumers from “sions trade proces? y Se A » } \ Xx \ a = J FN Rertising, abelling?
