The latest ‘Trendicator’ Report, released today, reveals that the bank’s index of leading indicators grew by only 9.5 per cent, rather than by the 1.0 per cent as estimated earlier, in the first three months of this year. “Tt continues however, to be our forecast that real economic average as high as 5.0 per cent in 1976, but this forecast depends on strong consumer spending and housing ex- penditures,” Dr. Robert Baguley, Royal Bank senior economist and co-designer of ‘Trendicator’ noted. Dr. Baguley said he ex- pects that new be very weak in the year. He added that the feeble first quarter performances of two ‘Trendicator’ com- ponents-real corparate pre- tax profits, and the ratio of price to unit labor costs--are not good economic signs. “The sharp decline in these two components un- derscores the -difficulties corporations ‘will have in generating the savings required to finance a new burst of investment spen- ding,” the Royal Bank senior economist said.
