A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 17, 2003 southern fire fighting experience to benefit © disaster planning here TERRACE FIRE chief Randy Smith can't wail to translate his experience in dealing with the forest fires down south into dis- aster planning up here. Smith, his wife Donna and another -Terrace -fire- fighter, Peter Weeber, have had nearly two months of combined work with either the Provincial Emergency Program or the Red Cross’ in the Kam- loops and Barriere areas. That’s given them a close up and personal look at the type of effort that goes into building -— and operating — a disaster re- sponse network. “As terrible as this has been for the people ‘in- volved, the advances I’ve seen in emergency opera- tions in the province have. been phenomenal,” said Smith in an interview dur- ing his second stint down south. “To see regional dis- tricts and municipalities and other agencies work- ing together — it’s the way ~ to go.” The simple fact that the wild fire fighting and after- math has been going on for such a long time period of time has given agencies and people the opportunity to hone disaster planning | and response, said Smith, “Usually when an event happens, the system is put together in a very short pe- riod of time. There’s no opportunity to work out the bugs. And when the emer- gency is over, the system istorndown.” | “This time there has - ‘been that opportunity: to -work out the bugs,” said ‘Smith. , “You can’t leave here ‘without sitting down and ‘Read And -- CATCH ALL THE ACTION AT: COMIC ENCOUNTERS Games ¢ Comics * Trading Cords Books « Mail Orders Welcome NOW OPEN AT OUR NEW LOCATION! #102-4435 Lakelse Ave. Terrace, B.C. ¥8G IPI (250) 638-7293 website: www.comic-encounters.com Bites Ot Comace © |F. eae Northwest Smile Design Center DeP.A. And that’s been good to see,” he said. Smith added that the knowledge and experience being amassed will place B.C. at the front of disaster planning in the country. The Smiths were fo- cussed on the emergency social services portion of the Provincial Emergency Program's efforts through the regional emergency operations centre in Kam- loops, It's also the back-up to the main operations centre in Victoria. Weeber, as.a. Red Cross volunteer, had been posted to the Barriere area, deal- ing with people who hive last homes, businesses and their livelihoods. Northwest Provincial Emergency Program offi- cial Maurie Hurst has also been posted to Kamlaops and local transportation minisiry official Don Ram- say also spent time in the North Thompson area.
