trees next to Totem Furniture and Appliances last waek. He was falling the

dying trees after a branch broke off damaging the roof of the furniture store.
Armed with specialised equipment, Quigley downed the trees plece by piece.

panding the amount of pro-
tected areas set out in the
just-concluded Kalum
land-use plan,

The document was
hammered out in Decem-
ber but three areas were
left unresolved because
environmentalists at the
table wanted more land
preserved.

_ The plan has since gone
through a public review
and the final decision on
the untesolved areas is ex-
pected to be made soon by
cabinet.

Giesbreeht, who now
sits in cabinet as highways
minister, says he can’t di-
yulge whether it has even
been discussed yet there.

But he said he’s made a
personal decision at least
one of the unresolved
areas should be preserved.

That’s the Foch and
Giltoyees watersheds -— a
large 60,000 hectare area
that would connect marine
parks along the Douglas
Channel with the Gitna-
doix River provincial park.

All parties to the talks
agreed that the small pro-
tected areas for the scenic
Foch Lagoon and Gil-
tayees Inlet anchorages be
protected, but foresters and
prospectors opposed pre-
serving the larger area be~
hind them.

“My preference is for
that to become part of the
protected area,” Gies-
brecht said. “There are
some timber values lower
down, but the upper areas
is mostly rock and ice.
And it docs connect with
the Gitnadoix.”

Other unresolved issues
can be dealt with through
increased restrictions to
protect scenic views, or
special management zon-
ing, he added.
