FACING TAX HIKE: TK Air Charters’ Trev Bowker is among the airport-based operators trying to figure out how to avoid a huge proparty tax increase. Aviators pleading for property tax leniency BUSINESSES at the air- pert are pinning their hopes to dodge a massive tax increase on a combi- nation of gentle treatment from city council and an appeal of the airport’s as- sessed value. Council had initially agreed to give the society that runs the airport a grant in aid to ease the property tax increase that takes ef- fect this year. Because the city ex- panded its boundaries to take in the -airport- last year, businesses there now © pay the city’s higher busi- ness tax rate instead of the one.charged by the region- al district. For some businesses it means paying double to triple what they paid last year. The city grant of $96,000 would mean a . More modest increase this year before the full hit takes effect next year. Terrace Kitimat Airport Society member Gerry Martin reminded council the tax dollars it’s collect- ing amounts to new money for the city that comes at no cost in terms of provi- sion of services there. “They are dollars that are unincumbered for the city,” he noted. Lloyd Hull, the operator of a large private hangar at the airport, said he won't accept such a major tax increase. , “You will see our build- ings torn down and we will be leaving the airport if they stay in place,” he said. “That’s not a threat, that’s a fact.” “We should not be taxed the same as the downtown,” he added. Other businesses there, particularly helicopter companies, could .also re- locate if taxes became too high. “It’s always an option,” said Canadian Helicopters . base manager Dave New- man. “We don’t have to be located at an airport to do business.” Hawkair Aviation oper- ations. manager Dave Menzies warned erosion of businesses at the airport would ptit further. pressure on. the viability of the air- port. , “A lot of the businesses up there could topple like dominoes if things get too much tougher,” he said. In addition to that they've faced increasing regulatory and service costs from Transport Cana- da, and rising fuel costs. “Everything you can imagine has gotten more expensive,” he said, ad- ding a big property tax hike could be the final straw. “You are the only peo- ple we can come and complain to face to face. You’ve got to be easy with us,” he said.
