It’s a sign the profession is changing to meet the diverse and growing needs of clients in the 90s, says Allen Fowlis of the Chartered Accountants of B.C. who was in the area recently. He's also president of the tug- boat company Scaspan Interna- tional and as such is an example of that change. More than half of the chartered accountants in the province now work ‘for industry and govern- ment as apposed to being in their own practice. “Life in the 90s is becoming more and more complex and complicated, Chartered accounta- nts can bring their skills to a wide area. There’s a bigger role for financial management and charlered accountants are well- qualified,”’ said Fowlis. “The 90s are hard-nosed in terms of business, It’s a reflection of that change. We feel chartered accountants can bring common sense business counsel where necded,’’ he added, Chartered accountant firms are also changing by adding consult- ing and policy analysis sections. And Fowlis says people living in smaller towns will notice their local accountants changing to meet the new demands. The institute is looking at better ways of connecting accountants in more rural areas with up to date information through com- puter systems.
