RIDIMORIALL COMIMIENT CLC needs layoffs answer — The Canadian Labor Congress con- vention takes place at a time when economists and other seers are in a pes- simistic mood, predicting such things as a “synchronized world-wide slump”. Of course they speak of the capitalist world, because the socialist countries have no slump, no recession. Ih coming to grips with the deep- rooted threats to the livelihood of Cana- dian workers, the CLC must be expected A Little Recession FLASHBACKS FROM THE COMMUNIST PRESS 25 years ago... MOTHER’S DAY FOR PEACE Mother's Day is Sunday May 8 — but in July of this year will come an even greater occasion to honor those who give life when the World Congress of Mothers convenes. The call to this un- precedented congress, issued by “the Women’s. International Democratic. Federation, | says: “We who know the joy of having children also know the agony of losing them. Itis our duty to pro- tect them from the evils menac- ing them — hunger, cold, mis- ery, disease and war ... There are hundreds of millions of us, women and mothers, who want peace. We are the forces of lite of happiness, of progress . . . We cannot permit the H-Bomb ever to be used again. Together with the forces of peace all over the earth we will wrest it from those who are threatening our chil- dren. No one in the world must be allowed to make use of it... 50 years ago... FRENCH CANADIAN WORKERS ON MAY DAY MONTREAL — Despite all the efforts of the boss police to prevent a mass demonstration of Montreal workers on May Day, despite the advertising ban of the police chief against a street demonstration, despite the raid- ing of the Communist’ Party headquarters and the seizure by the police of May Day leaflets from the printers, the workers of Montreal answered the call of the Communist Party and staged one of the biggest and most mili- tant street demonstrations that Montreal has ever seen. During the street meeting four of the organizers were ar- rested by police and charged with unlawful assembly but they ~ were bailed out by the Labor De- fence League and were on hand for the evening meeting when 2,000 workers jammed the La- borer’s Hall. Well, let's all ask Canada Packers Inc. After paying all ex- penses, setting aside enough for taxes and adding to a few reserve funds, they had a profit of $25,564,000 in the 52 weeks ended March 29, 1980 — up from $20,905,000 a year Figures used are from the company's financial statements. Second class mail registration number 1560 __ PACIFIC TRIBUNE—MAY. 9, 1980—Page 4 The Trudeau government’s decision to help the USA sabotage the Olympic Games puts Canada in the shameful role of riding the propaganda cart ,of the CIA, the Pentagon hawks, and the unstable Carter administration. The purpose of the U.S. propaganda cam- paign is to drum up an excuse for aggressive war simultaneously with’ spraying the world with anti-Soviet and anti-socialist hatred. Out of all that Car- ter hopes to get re-elected. But the U.S. war strategy has passed the point of being a mere concern. There" is an immediate and mushrooming danger of global nuclear conflict arising out of the calculated United States drive to dominate the world and halt im- perialism’s. decline. The Canadian Government's part of © this U.S. strategy smells of hypocrisy, and invites the most searing protest from the Canadian people. Look at the Olympic boycott hoax. It can have no relation to Soviet-Afghan relations and the apprehended CIA destabilization of Afghanistan. The Olympics is used by Carter to bolster his election stance, to try to smear the USSR, and to whip up support for U.S. war plans — including the take-over of foreign resources. U.S. hands off Caribbean! For what purpose are the USA’s mas- sive military manoeuvres in the Carib- bean? Has the United States been threatened by any of the Caribbean countries? The suggestion is ludicrous, but the mass military action is ominous and threatening. The U.S. manoeuvres, code-named Solid Shield 80, scheduled for May 8 in- volves some 20,000 troops, 400 aircraft and 47 naval vessels! Not surprisingly this obvious “big stick” attempt to intimidate Caribbean countries, and worse, to rehearse the take-over of those U.S. strategy requires, has properly drawn protests. One of the most provocative features of these bully tactics is the use during the exercise of the U.S. base squatting at Guantanamo, in Cuba. The leader of the Communist Party of - Canada, William Kashtan, has urged Canadians to “condemn this exercise whose aim is to destabilize and under- mine socialist Cuba.” With justification he accused the USA of wanting “to re- store the old regime and take advantage to come up with solutions which point ~ We wish the delegates success. Their unity and development of worker poweT is the way toward programs to get the crisis off the backs of the workers. ms = Change ‘me too’ to ‘not us’ The Canadian Government crawled into line, and backed the U.S. boycott (as well as agreeing to sanctions against Iran). Next the Canadian Broadcasting ‘Corporation clamped radio and censorship on the entire Canadian people — refusing to fulfill its contractto cover the Games. Under this and other right-wing pressure, the Canadian — Olympic Association knuckled under to- the U.S. propaganda stunt. Now the big business National. Hockey League has killed the Canada Cup tournament EY. | art of the anti-Soviet propaganda wave. - Of all the scummy campaigns of tric- kery designed to lead a timid Canadian public by the collective nose, this must hit a low. We're expected to accept not only ~ a Games boycott, destruction of Olympic ideals, ploughing under of Canadian athletes, but news coverage censorship as well. The Trudeau government should get — up off its knees and declare itself for independent policies serving the Cana- — dian people. It should be called upon to” renounce its support of the U.S. Olympic | boycott, and its praise of the U.S. military raid on Iran. We need policies worthy of - a Canadian Government, not some > hand-me-down directives from Washington. of temporary difficulties to weaken Cuba. This won’t happen,” he added. | A telling point made by the Commu: — nist leader was that the USA should get > its troops out of Guantanamo “rather | than protesting the legitimate action by _ the USSR in aiding Afghanistan.” Numerous voices have been raised in the Caribbean itself against this U.S. threat of war for resources, war for bases, war for domination by its mono- — polist ideology. From its headquarters in Mexico, the Latin American Federation | of Journalists has voiced support for Cuba in view of questionable events — around the Peruvian Embassy. Nicaragua’s Interior minister calls the manoeuvres “a provocation,” and de- mands “an explanation,” of the “display of military might”. Panamanian workers and women’s organizations repudiate | the military manoeuvres. sat It is time Canada’s government spoke up before the world and likewise re- | pudiated this U.S. attempt to boss the | peoples of the Caribbean and Latin America.
