perce Pioneering spirit revealed in book I RECENTLY talked to a fascinating couple, Jerry and Rose Hale, who live beside Tatogga Lake, six hours north on the Cas- siar hwy. They’ve just finished writing a. new book, called / Never Walked Alone. The book tells the Story of the Hale family which moved in 1957 from Texas to the Peace River country. : Jerry was born in Texas and he remembers his family as being very or, farming with mules. : The family emigrated to the homesteading atea of Warsley, Alberta in 1957, but it was still hard for farmers there. . Jerry’s father wasn’t just a farmer. He also Started the Worsley Bap- tist Church and was a ‘pastor there for 20 years. : Al the same lime Jerry’s HERES ‘N THERE: YVONNE MOEN brother D.K. Hale was living in Terrace, and was the pastor of the Uplands Baptist church. Jerry’s wife Rose, of ‘Alberta Rose” as he called her, was born near Eueka River in Alberta. Her father Dick Dixon was a great outdoorsman. Rose’s mother Florence was half Cree. She taught Dick how to cook ban- nock over a campfire and the two cleared their land by hand. Jerry and Rose married on October 24, 1959, Jerry was 19 and Rose was 17, Jerry and Rose had five children three daughters Annabella, Lisa and Darla and two sons Slan and = Manny. Manny lives in Terrace now, Jerry and Rose’s book ielis ‘what it’s like’ to carve a farm and ranch out of the bush and how to raise a family of five children. Times were tough, and ultimately they lost: their home to the bank. Eventually Jerry and Rose moved to Tatogga Lake in northern B.C. to operate the Tatogga Lake Resort. They sold the business in 1994 to Hal and Bunty Altaus. Many people here will remember Hal as the butcher at Terrace Co-op, Jerry and Rose now own the properly next door, and live in. their retirement home beside beautiful Tatogga Lake. They were recently away visiting family and had an unexpected visitor go into their house and make quite a mess. Apparently a huge griz- zly bear entered” their home by ripping apart one section of a wall to make his entry. Then he started to pull things apart. He even went into their bedroom and walked on their bed — which he broke —- and somehow smashed a rocking chair. He ate everything he could, including the par- ridge. The story almost sounds like something from the Goldilocks and Caledonia scholarship winners ‘CALEDONIA grade 12 stu- ‘dents won thousands of dol- Jars to help them continue ‘their schooling.
