TERRACE ~ — The first chunk of extra’ money from the pro- vince to cover what would have been a budget deficit resulting in layoffs and bed closures at Mills Memotial Hospital should arriye in a couple of weeks. It follows a report released last month which recommended the facility.receive more money. Théeport was commissioned after the« hospital. announced this spring it. would close beds and lay off up to six people to cayer an estimated $250,000 | deficit. Hospital spokesman Michael Lejsinger’ said the extra money will arrive as ‘soon as the pro- vince receives a motion passed ‘by; the hospital’s governing board to accept the report and its.recommendations. “The board has now done that and we expect an official ‘etter with the new budget. allocation soon,’’ he said. Consultant Michael Walker recommended the hospital keep a closer ' eye on its spending, bill the Medical’ Services Plan for work itisn’t billing for now and generate new. income by boosting promotion of its new nuclear medicine facility. Yn return; ‘for all of that, Walker recommended the pro- vince increase its contribution to'the hospital’s budget. ‘Hospital money. Should flow soon — Michael Leisinger He said the hospital could raise another $83,000 a year by itself and that the province should give $145,000. Both parties had agreed to treat the report's: findings as binding. Leisinger said the ministry probably won't have to fullfil . all of its commitment this year. That's because the hospital’s budget -year is’ nearly half over and new ventures won't require all the money that would be_ needed to cover a full year of operation. In particular, the hospital will receive $55,000 for a part time Tey parc perre? bio-medical engineer. anda part 7 time respiratory technician. .. Thase positions have yet to be filled. The remaining amount, near- Upreer Terrace Standard, Wednesday, October. 16, 1991 ~ Page’A ly $100,000, will go to the —Po"™ hospital's operating room, pharmacy and pediatrics ward, Leisinger said savings from bed closures and nursing lay offs would have been transfer- red to those above areas. The Walker report recom- | mended increasing by seven to 37 the number medical/surgical beds at. ‘the hospital. Leisinger described that recommendation as making for- mal what had been an informal practice all along. KEKKKKK In the meantime, the hospital continues io explore a plan to bring in day care surgery recovery beds, They will be for people who need to rest after day surgery but who .won’t need to stay overnight. This will help reduce overall operating costs. kkkekkk And a new computer system to keep track of patient services and costs will be installed soon. It'll enable hospital officials to pick up expenditure and use trends sooner than they have been able to do in the past. 20% UPTOWN GIRL FASHIONS OFF ENTIRE STOCK PLUS — BONUS COUPON.
