Athletics Record, Jan. - Fab. 1990 I hope that the following will ’ give your readers an understand- ing of what has happened in the Skeena Valley region of the province over the last year. 1989 has seen a growth in participa- ‘tion in nearly all of the events held, and 1990 will see more events taking place. We invite ‘any and all B.C.A. members to date. participate in our races if they. travel to our area, I can be con- tacted as to the specific date of a race but, generally, most will be held within one week of the 1989 . Glory Day IV -(Prince Rupert - May 13) The Nelsons’ strong of 10K Glory Days victories came to an end as Terrace’s Ed Ansems re- versed the order of last year’s finish and edged Charles Nelson of Prince Rupert by just over a minute. Ansems came in at 33:54, followed by Charles Nelson (34:55) and Ray Leonard (36:31). Sue Simpson of Terrace won the women’s side of this race in a time of 33:44. Karl Stevens won the 5km race in 19:41, and Pauline Klie of Kitimat won the women’s side of the 5km event in a time of 23:14. The race followed a hilly course, but that didn’t discourage the over 210 participants in the two races from taking part. Annual Spring Run (Terrace - June 4) Master’s runner Ed Ansems grabbed the lead early on in the race-and held on to a one-block lead over Charles Nelson of Prince Rupert (35:00) to.win ina time of 34:26. Third place went to Colin Parr (35:54), Sue Simp- ’ ‘gon of Terrace won the ladies’ ‘side in a time of 39:18, followed by Jackie Sturn (44:18) and Nancy Murray (45:42). ‘The Skm race saw Gordon Bux- ton (17:45) beat our Gary Pet- _tipas (19:39) and Jon Shepherd (19:57), Debbie Scarborough won the ladies’ Skm in 22:36, followed by Megan Reid and Sarah Weston. The weather for the event was too good, a temperature in the mid-20’s slowed many of the runners on their second lap of ‘the two-lap [0km course. Forty- five runners took part in the two SACHS IA Sar at ACUTE ARR) OPAC TT races. . Alcan’s Half-Marathon (Kitimat - June 17) The weather broke cool and cloudy for the 12th annual half marathon. Seventy-five runners took part in this year’s event which also included a 10km race. Gord Buxton of Terrace turned in the fastest 10km time (39 min.), while Pauline Klie of Kitimat won the women’s race in a time of 47 minutes. Ed Ansems of Terrace was first in_the half marathon with a time of 76 minutes while Sue Simpson won the women’s side in 87 minutes. Smithers Fall Fair ;10KM : Richard Harrison ors ‘Smithers topped a field of 36:in ‘this se¢- ond annual race. He finished in a time of 32:28, followed by master’s runner Ed Ansems (33:59) of Terrace. Neil Fleisch- mann of Terrace placed third. Sue Simpson of Terrace won the women’s race in a time of 39:48, followed by Susan Davies and Diana Wood. Marilyn Earl won the masters women’s category. Skeena Valley Half-Marathon 5K and 10K race (Oct. 15) A new course and perfect fall weather added up to the best half-marathon race ever held in Terrace. This event attracted 78 runners of all ages, including 38 out-of-town runners. Masters’ runner Ed Ansems of Terrace led the half marathon race from start to finish, but was dogged the entire distance by Smithers’ runner Richard Harrison. After 12 miles of neck-and-neck com- petition, the two runnets de- cided that it. would be ap ~ propriate to end this race in a tie. Diana Woods of Terrace prevailed in the open women’s class, while Joe Nelson of Prince Rupert won the under-19 category. Results: Open men — 1) Richard Har- rison (1:14.45); 2) Colin Parr (1:20.08); 3) Gord Buxton (1:22.53). Women — 1!) Diana Wood (1:40.12); 2) Janis German (1:53.30); 3) Lori Paolinelli (1:53.35). Hazelmere Valley SK and 10K (May 26) Terrace masters’ runner Ed Ansems placed first overall out of over 200 entrants in the 10km - section of this race. His time of. 34:05 placed him about one-half minute ahead of the next closest competitor, who just happened to be a masters’ runner also. . - Skeena Valley Triathton (Terrace - July 16) ~The third running of this event attracted entrants from around the province, as more than 130 athletes participated. The event consisted of a 1km swim in Lakelse Lake, a 40km bike ride, and a 10km run. This year, the weather was ideal and the water was warm. Jamie Cathcart (1:50.38) of Vancouver took top honors, but was not able to take the top prize of an all expenses paid trip to the Hawaii Ironman Triathlon. Sec- ond place went to John Nelson of Prince Rupert (2:00.41). Gary Moen (2:02.19) of Kamloops was third and gladly accepted the trip to Hawaii. Carol Coan (2:37.22). was the first ladies’ finisher, while Cheryl Steele (2:39.29) and Janice Dick (2:44.11) followed closely behind. Coming up this year The Skeena Valley Roadrun- mers have planned four major events for the 1990 season, -in- - cluding a new race. to kick things. off on March 31. It’s a Prince Rupert-to- Terrace relay race on March 31, Although details are not yet complete, organizers hope to have teams from Terrace, Smithers and Prince Rupert as definite entries. Event two on the agenda is the © annual spring run on Sunday, May 27. This is a five and” 10-kilometer race. . The third major race is a resumption of the long-time ‘King of the Mountain’ race. That goes on Sunday, July 29, The final major event of the season is the annual All Seasons half-marathon, which also in- cludes five and 10K events. This is set for mid-October.
