In 1982-83 registra- tions were up to 150 but in 1986 the decline is . drastic leaving 15 kids active in BMX racing locally. Maybe parents don’t realize that BMX racing is a family sport, for any age group, said Butler. As long as a person can ride a trike, a two wheel bicycle with training wheels or a BMX bicycle they are more. than welcome, If we have to close down next year,‘ said Butler, the Torken BMX Club would have to forfeit their track to the district and the ball club takes over the whole thing. If in two years interest is renewed for the sport, it could get rather costly, Butler said. A new site would have to be found and a track built. ‘We're hanging in there and we'd like to see the club remain active in the area’, Butler added. The decline for BMX racers in. the area has been attributed to kids outgrowing the sport by choosing different sports. The cost of the equip- ment, the fee of racing and bike maintenance is said to have been costly by parents. A video of local racers along with Prince Rupert and Kitimat’s)s BMX racers is presently being made, It will be shown on CFTK television to help promote the sport.
