SST UT INSLIMEF Clayton, Tuohey and Murchie immediately had a steep increase in eastbound traffic, peaking at the evening rush hour. The residents of that area deserve immediate relief from that problem. Those residents complained loud and long to Council. The traffic committee was directed to come up with some solution. I attended the traffic committee meeting of February 26th. Many proposals were put on the table for discussion. JI was the only private individual attending other tnan the representatives of Clayton, Tuohey/Murchie. I made it clear that I was sympathetic to their sudden increase in traffic but any solution proposed had to address the very long standing problem of excessive traffic on Patricia and Hastings. When I left the meeting we were talking in terms of no left hand turn signs on Kitchener or stop signs along the route to discourage traffic. We were not taking about removing the traffic island and going back to page ane for the residents of Patricia and Hastings. To my Surprise when I phoned City Hall on Tuesday, March 3rd ta inquire about the next Traffic Committee Meeting, I was told that the traffic island was ordered removed and Patricia and Hastings would have to find another solution to their problem. Four years of complaining, 4 Town Hall meetings and a promise ag recent as October 1991 and the experiment was over, Three weeks is not a fair test! What persiiasive powers do the residents of Clayton/Tuohey and Murchie have that the residents of Patricia and Hastings lack? I wish I knew, If I had known that they were this good, I would have hired them long ago to argue on my behalf. Safety is repeatedly brought up as a concern. The residents of Clayton/Tuohey and Murchie quite rightly argue that their Streets are too narrow for the volume of iraffic. I agree. In canvassing the area I was surprised at the number of parents on Patricia and Hastings who do not trust their Ghildran to play in their front yard for fear that the children may wander too close to the busy road. Those same parents indicate that they may move simply because of their traffic concerns, no cther reason, just traffic. This is unacceptable. In talking to resident at the south end of Hastings Street I learned that the traffic is so backed up that it routinely takes six to eight traffic light changes to get from Hastings onto Lougheed. One gentleman told me that car exhaust fumes were so strong that he could not leave his house windows open, front or rear. Residents on Hastings encounter long delays in simply getting onto Hastings Street. ITEM | PAGE | 1/4
