David Rueben Stranger Sr. was born on April 29, 1928 in Selkirk, Manitoba to parents Soloman and Annabella Stranger. David came froma family of 19. children, He had 11 brothers (Leslie, Freeman, Dennis, Franklin, Winston, Emest, Earl, . Melvin, Jim, Frank, Roderick) and seven sisters (Annabelle,’ Olive, Nellie May, Jeanette, Beity, Katherine, and deceased. baby sister Florence.) All of the children were born in * Manitoba and grew up in the Selkirk area. _ David went to’ school: at a residential. school in Manitoba and laler joined the Navy and served overseas for five years. Upon his discharge, he went to. Fort St Sohn to work i in construc- tion there, : While there he met. his wife, Karen. . Karen Amunson was bor. at Provost, Alberta: She also came from a large family of 10 children —— eight sisters and one brother. Karen was al thal time working at the trading post. David has pursued his drawing hobby for most of his life, specializing - in cartoons. . After seeing each other for about four and a half years, David and Karen decided to elope and were marricd on Aug. 19, 1960 in Winnipeg, Man. They slayed in Winnipeg for about two. years. and. their: son, David Jr., was born. there on Apr, 12, 1962, ; They moved. to Edmonton where David worked at the Glen Rose Hospital as an engineer, While living. there, daughter Zina was born on June 16, 1964. Later that same year they de- cided lo make a move-to Terrace, B.C, When they first arrived j in Ter- race they lived al the Cedar Motel and David worked ~at- Mills Memorial Hospilal, He later became the chief engineer responsible for proper operation of all the equipment and machinery used thranghout the hospital. vos David worked at. Mills Memorial for more than a decade. Alter recovering from .his first heart attack, David: went to-work al Skeenaview Lode and worked there until theboiler room’ and type of work he did was phased oul, and he relired. David for- mare’ than 20 years suffered from a- heart condition and had twice undergone. open heart surgery al St. Pauls Hospital in Vancouver. He came from a very artistic family and had several sisters who do beautiful oil paintings. His nephew Steward Stranger (son of Frank Stranger) — wis commissioned to do a painting for Prince Charles and Princess Dias a wedding gift from the Province of Manitoba. Four of David’s brothers are still living on the original family homestead in Manitoba. Davia was pre-deceased by his parents. Soloman and Annabella ‘Stranger, brothers Melvin, Jim, Frank, . Roderick, baby sister Florence, and brother-in-law Laurie Asham. Funcral services were held at McKay's Funeral Chapel in Ter- race, B.C. Pallbcarers were Dale Creek, George Lunz, Ron Gowe, Clint Wood, Rick Miller, and Dan McBryan. Interment look place at Terrace Municipal Cemetery. There was an honour guard from the Royal Canadian Legion, and Lt. Norman Hamelin of the Salvation Army officiated. David lcaves his wife Karen, son David Jr., daughter Zina, son- in-law Mike, brothers Leslie, Freeman, Dennis, Franklin, Winston (Foy), Ernest (Florence), Earl (Nellic), sisters Annabelle (Douglas) Whillingham, Olive Stranger, Nellie May (Lloyd) Sin- clair, Jeanette Asham, Betty Brouse, Katherine (Russell) Everett, numerous nicces and nephews. ka kkk I MUST SEND out very special thanks to local writer Stephanie Wiebe.
