Hospital administrator Norm Carelius says the board decision to consider having a CT scanner installed at Mills Memorial came as a result of lobbying by medi-: cal staff from every hospital in_ the Northwest. CT stands for: computer tomogtaphy, and the device is a sort of elaborate X- ray thachine that takes i images of the patient from numerous dif- ferent angles and then generates a composite picture to the physi- cian for diagnostic use. Local patients who require the procedure presently have to travel to Vancouver ‘or Prince George. Carelius said the board met recently with a Ministry of Health representative, who told them the population in this re- gion doesn’t justify the pur- chase, Carelius noted that the R.E.M, Lee Foundation had in- dicated willingness to raise a portion of the capital cost under the assumption that the ministry would provide the balance. In addition to the initial in- vestment, Carelius said, the in- ‘strument would have to be staff- ed by two trained technicians and would cost about $300,000 annually to operate. Doctors and hospital staff in the Northwest haven’t given up the idea, however. Carelius said they are keeping an informal tally of the number of patients shipped out for the procedure, and the numbers will be ana- lyzed after an unspecified period of time to deterrhine the level of. demand for CT scanning ser- vices in the Tegion.
