Page 12, The Harald, Tuesday, January a7, 1981 Looking back at While theoties and tales abounded, noone ever knew. what: made the Bluenose so fast, Aquirk in construction, a late change in design and the positioning of her spars were matters of speculation. And one of the men who shaped the LUNENBURG, . N.S. (CP) -— For many Canadians, the final indignity had already been done when they mourned the death of the Bluenose 35 years ago on Jan, 29, 1946. Canadh was struggling in the Depression and later at war while the black-hulled schooner, its illustrious racing career still growing, was beset by financial troubles. The Biluenose hailed from an era when trim lines and taut sails were for the speed of cam- merce more than the stuff of competition. But Canadiana ef- fectively shunned her when she and other fishing schooners of the day could no longer earn their keep. The Bluenose began as one of more than 100 saltbankers in the Lunenburg fishing fleet and excelled at ber trade before. times changed, bringing new ways ta reap the Grand Banks harvest of cod she had fished after first breaking water on March 26, 1921. —- Depicted since 1937 on the Canadian dime, the Bluencse came to be known as the queen of ,the North Atlantic fishing fleet. But it was her racing prowess that made her -— and keeps her — a household word on even Jandlubbera’ lips, -and anchors Nova Scotia's most famous’ ‘piece of nautical history’ in the 20th century. The most prominent race of the time, the America’s Cup, was dismissed with scorn by Atlantic feet skippers asa blue- blood meeting of yachts built without a fish in mind. So the captains of Lunenburg and Gloucester, Mags., jumped. when William H. Dennis,. owner of the Halifax Herald, ‘offered an international racing prize for. working schooners manned by bona-f ide fishermen. The American . schooner Esperanto easily outsailed Canada's entry, Delawana, in the 1920 contest. That humiliating defeat was Canada’s last, The late W. J. Rowe of Halifax was commissioned to design a veesel for speed and agility, able to master the whims of the tur- bulent North Atlantic for profit and racing superiority. For $35,000 — $10,000 more than the average schooner cost — Smith and Rhuland turned out ° the vessel that claimed and never relinquished the Her skipper was Angus Walters, a scrappy sallor whose devotion to his career-long charge made even mere painful the seme of “national = shame” described by a tewapaper editorial | when the Bluenose was relegated to the role of workhorse, eventually falling victirn to the claws af a Haitian reef on Jan. 2, 1046. F Walters, who died in 1968 at age 87, lived to sail on the maiden voyage of Bluenose 11, launched in 1963 from the Smith and Rhuland yard while there were still Lunenburg ship- wrights who knew the old ways firat-hand.
