Ai2 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 12, 1997 New sled put to quick use in daring rescue mission QUICK ACTION by mem- bers of Terrace Search and Rescue, and the availabilily of a brand-new rescue sled may have saved a snow- mobiler’s life three weekends ago in the Nass Valley. Weather conditions were near white oul-when the res- cue team headed up Sterling Mountain on Sunday, Jan. 26 to retrieve the injured snowmobdiler. “He was hurt pretly bad,”’ rescuer Ken Gibson says of the victim. ‘“‘If we didn’t have the sled, there’s no way that guy would tave gollen off the mountain.’” Gibson points out that weather conditions were such that it would have been impossible to bring in a helicopter. ‘We would have to wait for the weather to clear,’” be says. ‘‘And who knows how long that would have taken.”? The viclim was part of a group of snowmobilers from Prince Rupert who were riding on the popular Ster- Jing Mountain trails. According to rescuers, one of the snowmobilers went over a bank and fell off his sled. The rider following im likely didn’t see the ac- cident and also went over the bank, landing on top of the first rider — crushing his chest and shoulder. The group managed to get word back lo Terrace am- bulance who called Search and Rescue. They pul to- geller a team and headed out on snowmobiles with their new rescue sled to retrieve the victim. “We just got the sled,” says Dave Jephson of Ter- race Search and Rescue. ‘‘It MEMBERS OF Terrace Search and Rescue were glad to have a new rescue sled three weekends ago when they were called to bring back an injured snow- mobiler. It is about three metres long and onc metre wide — large enough to accommodale a stretcher, backboard, patient and a first-aid attendant who can monitor the patient's condi- tion. “It's a great piece of equipment,’’ Jephson says. “One of our biggest con- cerns is hypothermia, and this sled can totally enclose palients — to keep them out of the elemenis.”’ The injured snowmobiler was flown to Vancouver and is recovering in hospital.
