V5K1Z5 : LETTERS ‘No justification’ for a gas pipeline Michael Conway-Brown, Powell River, writes: The B.C. Utilities Commission hearings (in- to the controversial natural gas pipeline linking the mainland and Vancouver Island — Ed.) are miss- ing one essential element: project justification. It is Cheekye- Dunsmuir all over again — this route versus that route and soon — with a blatant refusal from the Socreds to review publicly the real question: justification. The hear- ings can only be a sham. While the Socreds steadfastly avoid the number one question, the feds won’t. They will be looking at it and any alternatives very critical- ly. If the line isn’t economically justifiable (as most economists agree) how likely are the feds to spr- ing a half billion dollar capital cost subsidy? Despite claims by Socred ministers, the feds have never com- mitted themselves to any subsidy. Dr. Margolick’s report and comments on the economics of the pipeline ‘‘lemon”’ accurately reflect most economists views. Dominic Watson is a former economist with the B.C. Ministry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources. He now writes a col- umn of analysis for the Financial Post. In his article ‘B.C. Must Set- tle Pipeline Issue’’ he finished with these words: “‘The major issue, however, is widely understood: the economics of the project just do not add up.”’ The political reality is this: Ot- tawa will decide whether that pipeline goes through, not the Utilities Commission, Environ- ment Minister Stephen Rogers or Premier Bennett. Will the closing scene see the Socreds whining and crying and fed-bashing if their lemon never flies? We may be witnessing a rather expensive public relations event. Near-Gilbert record blends history, styles LIFELINE. Holly Near and Ronnie Gilbert with Jeff Langley, Carri Bar- ton and Susan Freundlich. Record- ed live in San Francisco. $10.25 at the People Co-op Bookstore. It’s a rare pleasure to find one album that provides both warm, satisfying music and microcosm of the last 50 years of the progressive political and cultural scene of the US. Half a century ago, Ronnie Gilbert, whose mother was a rank and file activist in the International Ladies Garment Workers Union and a Communist, was playing drums in May Day parades and collecting coins on the street for refugees of the Spanish Civil War. Later, of course, Gilbert became a prominent member of the Weavers, a folk group that brought labor songs and works by such Black artists as Huddie Ledbetter before a mass audience. The Weavers suffered, but survived, the McCarthyite blacklist of the 50s. Holly Near’s mother worked in radical theatre in Philadelphia: her father organized aerospace workers. Together, the two singer- “songwriters unite in a thoroughly enjoyable blend of a proud history they share with many thousands. Lifeline, for example, has songs by Woody Guthrie, Ledbetter, Violeta Parra (a founder of the New Song Movement of Latin America), Earl Robinson, and Near.It features songs about Har- riet Tubman, Stephen Biko, the Spanish Civil War, and women’s rights. It contains the Weavers’ famed ‘‘Goodnight Irene’’ the beautiful ‘‘Hay Una Mujer Desaparacida.”’ Perhaps the philosophy of these two talented, committed artists is best expressed in the words of a haunting meody they sing about the martyrs Sacco and Vanzetti: And all who knew these two . good men — knew they never had to rob or kill — each had lived by his own hands — And they lived well — And all their lives they had struggled — To rid the earth of all such crimes — And all our lives we. must struggle — To rid the earth of all such crimes. — Chuck Idelson “e Labour Law @ Criminal Law @ Estates and Will tig Classified Advertising: COMING EVENTS OCT. 20 — South Van.
