PETITION OF THE RESIDENTS OF THE NORTH SIDE OF ORIOLE PLACE The residents of the North side of ‘Oriole Place’ backing onto the Port Coquitlam Blue Heron Bird Sanctuary, hereby request The Mayor and Council of the City of Port Coquitlam to consider the following: Since the enclosure of various properties at the end of Oriole Place a short-cut route between residential areas East of Oriole Place, and the Hyde Creek recreation centre and nearby Secondary school, has become established. This route runs through the Bird Sanctuary, along the back of and in some cases across the property of the various residences on the North side of Oriole Place, and is used by a considerable number of school children, 2 to 4 times daily, and children and adults on weekends. This has become a source of distress for the owners of the aforesaid properties for the following reasons. 1. For several owners the prime reason for settling on the said properties (at a considerable premium) was to enjoy the serenity and quiet which is aforded by the Bird Sanctuary. This is destroyed by the presence of the school children, and adults, who use this route. The route used by the children at present crosses some of the properties - causing damage. Any kind of appeal to these school children against their use of the route, has, at best acheived zero response, and at worst elicited acts of aggression; usually resulting in further damage to property. 3. As the route becomes more established, it will acheive greater popularity, increasing the above concerns. We feel that action should be taken by the City of Port Coquitlam to alleviate the above problems to the benefit of all concerned. To this end, the following suggesticns are made. Either An appropriately constructed pathway should be provided, set back into the Sanctuary some distance from the afore-mentioned properties. This would provide the desired short-cut for the school children, yet would keep them out of sight of the residents, thereby protecting their privacy.
