Braun St. mill Kiln key to more wood THE IDEA of a dry kiln addition to the Tezrace Pre-Cut operation may trouble neighbours, but mill owner Mo Takhar has been told by the forest service it’s a must. Kalum forest district manager Brian Downie explained Pre-Cut was awarded timber sale A36553 under the forest service’s small business program in July 1992. The award was made on the un- derstanding the Braun St-based business would construct a dry kiln. The sale was made up of two blocks. Downie said approval was given to log the first block and that was done last year. Although Takhar had not made formal application to log the other, the forest service has made it clear any such application won't be approved unless the kiln condition was met. Whether the kiln bad to be fully operational before cutting ap- proval was given or ‘‘substantial- ly complete’’ was open to negoti- ation, Downie said, But the bottom line, he added, was ‘We have to see something that assures us we will see a dry kiln,” In an April rezoning application to the city, Takhar cited construc- tion of a dry kiln as one of the reasons he needed to change the designation of 2811 Braun from residential to light industrial, That property is adjacent to his mill. The application was turned A10 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, September 21, 1994 IT WAS business as usual at Terrace Pre-Cut last week but the company has been told it will have to build a dry kiln if it wants to cut the rest of its Small Business timber sale, down and a subsequent sugges- tion that a special use permit be granted for part of the residential property has been rejected by neighbours. Soil site probed LAB RESULTS show the con- tamination in the Queesnway sewer ditch at the corner of Ken- worth was caused by vehicle washing, says environment minis- try protection official Alex Grant. He said the contaminated soil contained oils, solvents and paint products from a vehicle washing site which drains into the ditch. That site is on industrial proper- ty now owned by Saunders Haul- ing. Grant said the ministry doesn’t how long the vehicle washing site has been used. ‘Now that we know what the source of the contamination is we can start looking at who is li- able,”’ said Grant. ‘‘The results show that the present owners have some responsibility because it’s their property along with the prior owners.”” He said the area will be sur- veyed to measure-how much soil has been contaminsied. “We think is a fairly restricted area,'’ said Grant. ‘“The volume probably shouldn’t be larger than 10 cubic meties.”’ The tainted soil will then be dug out and replaced with clean dirt, said Grant.
