Chi ea [Beg BGT LABOR SOLIDARITY WITH CHILE A world trade union —con- ference in solidarity with democratic Chile will be taking place in Lisbon, Portugal from September 11 to 15. It is an in- credible sign of the times and a tremendous gesture of solidarity that the Portuguese trade union movement, itself the victim of fascism for so many years, asked to host the conference in that newly-liberated country. Trade unions from all over the world are being asked to send representatives to the con- ference, the aim of which is to consolidate world working class solidarity with embattled trade unionists in Chile. Among those which have already confirmed their par- ticipation are the World Federation of Trade Unions, the World Confederation of Labor and the International Con- federation of Free Trade Unions. Most of the major European trade union bodies will be there, including the British Trades and Labor Congress (TUC), the three French trade union centres ; i; F i By H..K. Is there a conspiracy to kill the fruit and truck farming industry in the Okanagan and lower Fraser Valley, or is it nothing but an unbridled grab for profits? It would seem that Mr. Whelan and Mr. Stupich should be pressed for some very concrete answers. USSR CANADA ELECTIONS ACT Electoral District of Burnaby-Seymour SUMMARY OF RETURN OF ELECTION EXPENSES : There is below set out, as required by Section 63 (6) of the Canada Elections Act, a summary, signed by the official agent, of the return of election ‘expenses made to me by him on behalf of Eric Waugh, one of the candidates at the recent election of a member to serve in the House of Commons of Canada held in the above mentioned electoral district, which said return is on file at my office and may, on payment of a fee of twenty cents, be there inspected and extracts taken therefrom at any reasonable time during the six months next after the 26th day of August, 1974, being the day upon which the said return was furnished to me. ‘ Dated at Vancouver this 26th day 974. ph Aue eet M. Beattie Returning Officer Summary of Saale of Election s of Eric Waugh: . nee Number of persons from whom (CGT, CFDT, FEN), the Italian trade union movement, the Scandinavian trade union federations and the trade unions of all the socialist countries. Broad representation is also expected from Arab, Latin American and Asian trade unions. In the letter to the World Federation of Trade Unions, Luis Figueroa, president of the CUT (Chilean Central. Con- federation of Labor), and CUT general secretary, Rolando Calderon set out the plans for the September conference: “At the 59th International Labor Conference in Geneva last June, the workers group of the conference in which were represented over 100 national centres of various outlooks, ideologies and international affiliations, proposed and ob- tained the adoption of a con- ference resolution condemning the crimes and violations of human and trade union rights perpetrated by the fascist military dictatorship in Chile. This resolution represented concrete solidarity with the Chilean trade union movement which is now outlawed and persecuted. “The CUT fully appreciated the joint stand taken by the world trade union movement in Geneva as well as the singular solidarity demonstrated by all workers’ organizations with our struggle. “While the 59th ILO Con- . ference was going on, the Por- tuguese Intersindical assured the CUT of its support for a great conference of world trade union solidarity with Chile, to be held in Lisbon from the 11th to the 15th of September, exactly one year after the fascist military which overthrew the con- stitutional democratic govern- ment and murdered president Allende. Many national and regional organizations sub- scribed to this proposal. “You will certainly un- derstand the significance of the Lisbon conference for the progress towards democracy in Portugal. The presence of the entire world trade union movement in that country will undoubtedly demonstrate, in one way or another, the confidence which workers everywhere place in the Portuguese workers and in their participation in the democratic process which is taking place in their country, " Lisbon hosts conference now freed from fascism which, elsewhere, by its crimes, im- pedes every expression of freedom of democracy, especially in Chile. “The CUT recently held a meeting with brothers from the Portuguese. Intersindical to examine the preparations for the conference and again reached complete agreement with them concerning the form of this assembly, the way it is to be run and the resolutions to be put forward. This should ensure complete respect for the various organizations taking part as well as provide a practical means of expressing the unity and solidarity of workers throughout - the world with the Chilean people and with other nations engaged in the struggle against fascism. . The labor movement in this country, led by the Canadian Labor Congress, has been out- standing in its demonstrations, appeals and participation in Solidarity actions with fellow trade unionists in Chile. Through its participation in the ILO and the ICFTU, it should extend that support for Chile and take its place at this world trade union forum. Canadian trade unionists have a contribution to make to this international trade union con- ference. It must be pressed on the CLC, provincial labor federations and all unions to attend and build for the event. Film salutes Victor Jara A film on folk singer Victor Jara, murdered by the Chilean military junta, is one of the contributions Britain will make to this year’s International Documentary and Short Film week in Leipzig, German Democratic Republic, in November.
