those mentioned as torturers in South
Africa would later show up in testimony
and evidence about recent torture inci-
dents in Namibia. We are compiling a
list of these and now have about 60
names. IADL will offer this evidence at

Schware emphasized that “‘it is im-
portant that people here in the U.S,

lar South African Army troops in the

country, holding it under military occu-

pation. They have even gone so far as to
put soldiers with guns, and with dogs, in
the schools, inside classrooms. They
have arrested and imprisoned every
known member of SWAPO. ;

“And they are getting ready now,
rigging South Africa’s so-called ‘free
election’ in Namibia set for December,”
Schware said. “People are being forced
to register for that election, some at
gunpoint. Parents are being told they
cannot send their children to school un-
less they register to vote; people looking
for work are told they cannot geta job
unless they register; sick people cannot
get into a hospital, get medical aid, un-
less they register. And many of these
people are told they have registered as
members of the ‘Democratic Turnhall
Alliance’ (DTA), South Africa’s front
group — or even that they have ‘already
voted’ by registering. SWAPO is correct
when it says no vote is genuine under
these conditions of war and repres-

~ sion.”

In a fiery speech delivered to the
Baku meeting, attorney Schware said:

own people,”’ Schware said. ‘“‘They are
conducting a war of aggression against
the neighboring ‘frontline’ states. This
is a daily war of aggression, of armed

incursions and massacres like Cassinga
in Angola and Chimoioi, Mapai, etc., in
Mozambique.” z ;
“They are committing war crimes,
acts of genocide, all with the help, aid

imperialism headed by the U.S.,”’
Schware said. ‘‘It is time that the inter-
national legal community made it
known in no uncertain terms that when
the people’s forces achieve victory —
and that time is not so far away — we, as

advocates, lawyers and jurists will be

glad to lend a helping hand to the libera-
tion movements when they finally bring
these bastardly criminals to justice.’’

later, this interviewer, that “‘wherever I
went on the IADL mission, I could see
with my own eyes the tremendous sup-
port given to Angola, Mozambique, the
South West African People’s Organiza-

tion (SWAPO) of Namibia, the Zim- -

babwe Patriotic Front and the African
National Congress of South Africa by
the people of the Soviet Union, the Ger-
man Democratic Republic and the other
socialist countries.

“But also world support, our support
here in the U.S., is: needed,”’ Schware
told me. ‘“‘More and more refugees are
fleeing to the ‘frontline’ states every
day. The racist regimes’ massacres are
