A COUPLE of weeks ago I-
decided to take the youngsters

. to see the film Fantasia. There

is such a lack of decent chil-
dren’s pictures that this, with

_ all its faults, was actually the

first film John had seen. * After
waiting in the lineup for half
an hour we arrived at ‘the ticket
booth where, much to my dis-
gust, I found that all. tickets
were the same price—50 cents.

nearly exploded when they
found out, and many people
walked away with their disap-
pointed children. Well, I did pay
up for the three of us, for after
travelling all the way into town
and knowing how excited John
was, I couldn’t stand seeing him
disappointed.’ —

This incident is quite a con-
trast to the situation in many
‘other countries where children’s
plays and theatres are regarded ,
as a normal part of life. In
Prague, Czechoslovakia, four
puppet and marionette theatres
and one legitimate theatre de-
voted entirely to children’s
plays, give one or more per-
flormances a day. The ‘theatre at
the Children’s Palace (the chil-
dren’s own department store)
‘Specializes in plays for pre-
school children given with ‘hand-
puppets.

Theatre-going is part of every

“child’s education in Prague, and

‘nursery school classes often
visit the ‘theatre with their
teachers. The City Theatre for
Young People, which has a staff
of 93 and is subsidized by the
city council, is popular with
school-age children. This the
atre gives morning and after-
moon performances primarily
‘for school classes during the
week, and family parties are
welcome at weekends.

The Young People’s Cinema
House shows ‘films specially
suiable for youngsters, and car-
toon studios have shown how
far animated cartoons can rise

above the slapstick level. <A
good example is. The Trees and

the Wing, which -explains in

simple terms how trees help
bring the rain and how the
country suffered when they
were indiscriminately cut down
for profit. These animated
cartoons as well as other films,
including documentaries about
nature and puppet films, are
shown at ‘special low-priced
children’s matinees.

IN ENGLAND, thousands of

children find that the panto-

mime is their main contact with -

the theatre, although most of
the pantos are produced for
family fun and few are written
specially for children. A new
idea which has proven over-
whelmingly popular is Caryl
Jenner’s Mobile Theatre which
tours ‘the country performing
plays in schools. All the plays
are written for children iby Miss
Jenner herself and “she has
found that youngsters prefer

these plays ‘to the picture shows. _

“The worst audiences,” she

Says, “are those of secondary .

school children who have never
seen a play before. They have
grown up with the cinema, see-
ing ‘stuff that makes no demand
on their attention. But it is very
easy ‘to awaken the imagination
and implant a permanent love
of the theatre when they are
young, provided you give them
what ‘they can understand. We
are creating a love of the the-
atre, ‘the theatre-goers of the
future, as we go along, as well
as giving children passing de-
light.”

Surely we in Canada with al!
our resources have something
better to offer our youngsters
than the Saturday movie which
provides a steady diet of vio-
dence, war, and neurotic caper-
ings destined to produce a gen-
eration of culturally starved peo-
-ple, conditioned to the accept-

Love, devotion in home provide

fine example for child to follow

WHEN, AT the right time,
you talk to your child about
sex life, you will have a
chance to link it with love,
and to create in the young
boy or girl a deep respect for
these matters—a civic, esthetic,
and ‘human respect.
Young ‘boys and girls learn

“about love largely through lit-

erature, the experiences of the

people around them, and their.

own social observations. Par-
ents should draw upon infor-
mation and ideas that young
people already ‘have, and should
make sex education an educa-
tion for love, that is, educa-
tion for a great and profound
feeling, a sentiment made
beautiful by the unity of life,
aspirations and hopes. And
therefore it must be made
without too open, and inevit-
ably cynical, analysis of nar-
rowly physiological questions.
Example holds the main
place in the giving of the right
sort of sex education. If real
love exists between the par-
ents—mutual respect, helpful-
ness, and reciprocal attention,
as well as open manifestation
of tenderness and affection be-
fore the eyes of the children
right ‘from their childhood—
then an attentiveness is un-
failingly awakened in the
children to the serious and
beautiful question of the rela-
tions between men and women.
Important too is the general
education for love in the child.
If, while growing up, he has
not learned to love his parents,
brothers and_ sisters, school
and country, if a deep-going
selfishness has been formed
from the very start, it will be
very hard to count on_ his
ability to deeply love the wo-
man he will choose. .
People of this sort ofte
show the strongest sexual
feelings, but they are not al-
ways inclined to esteem the
woman who attracts them, of
to accord a value ‘to her spir-
itual life, nor even to be in-
terested in ‘her. That is why
they change their interest
lightly, and are all set for
habitual disorder. This applies

naturally to women as well
as to men.

Non-sexual experience —
friendship and the experience
of love-friendship from child-
hood, and of attachments to-
ward various people, and love
of country created in child-
hood—all that constitutes the

best way to form a high social °

behavior with regard to the
woman-friend. ‘Without ‘this
kind of behavior, it is gener-
ally very hard to discipline

We -strongly advise parents
to lay particular heed to the
child’s feelings towards others
and toward society. ;

‘Here, naturally, talks alone
are not of much worth. He
must see a great deal, think
about many things, receive ar-
tistic impressions. ‘Literature,
films, theatre lead. excellently
toward these goals.

This kind of education will
have results even in sex edu-
cation. The traits of person-
ality and character will be
built on it that a man must
have who lives in a collective
society, and in the sphere of
sex such a man will conduct
himself morally.

A GOOD. USE of time work-
ed out in the family is equal-
ly useful. The child used to
orderliness from infancy, who
has never known a disorderly
existence or irresponsibility,
will carry this ‘habit into adult-
hood, and into his ‘personal
relations.

There is another important
factor in the suitable use of
time. A disorderly existence
often start in the haphazard
meeting of ‘boy and girl,
through idleness, boredom, or
poorly-directed pastimes. Par-
ents should know who their
children meet, and the object
of their get-togethers.

A good use of time is favor-
able to good health, which pre-
cludes premature sex experi-
ence. Get to bed early, get
up early with no unnecessary
hanging-about in bed—that is
good moral, and consequently
good sexual, training.

Another important condition
for sex education is that the
child be normally absorbed in
some hobby or work. This
question is very important in
sex education.

Boys and girls trained from
early childhood to a suitable
and precise use of time usually

feel an inclination for this way
of life; they have got used to
it, and it develops in them a
normal behavior toward others.

Sports too have their place

-in the right general education.

Although these measures and
principles do not have sex edu-
cation for their immediate ob-
jective they cannot ‘fail to lead
to it, since they make the best
contribution to character build-
ing and the organization of
mental and physical experience
of youth. They are, in reality,
the most powerful methods of
sex education.

ONLY WHEN the _ family
uses these principles can the

. direct action of parents through

talks be easy and fruitful. If
these conditions are not ob-
Served—if the child feels no
attachment for various people
and the collective society, and
if his time and sports life are
not organized — these talks,
even the most subtle and op-
portune ones, will have no
value.

Such talks should only take
place if the occasion presents
itself; they should not occur
too early and focus ‘the child’s
attention on his conduct. Yet
at the same time the slightest
deviation from normal behavior
should be mentioned. Nothing
should slip by or parents might
be faced later with a “fait
accompili.”’

Later on, these talks can as-
sume a persuasive character,
one of revealing and analyzing
a phenomenon, explaining
more positive ‘solutions to peo-
ple’s problems. They can: point
to the example of other young
men and women.

Talks to ‘the young child
should be shért, and need not
occasionally exclude a forbid-
ding and reproachful tone.
Parents can simply seek a more
honest behavior. Better still
if the parents refer to a third

- party in speaking of sex prob-

lems. They can then express
a more severe judgment, and
even disgust. eh!

At the same time, they can
show that they expect other
Ways of acting from their son aN
and daughter. At such times,
it is always useless to’ say,
“Never do that. It is not
good.” It is far better to say:
“I know that you won’t do
that. You aren’t made that
