Alliance to vote by phone THE CANADIAN Alliance is getting into the 1-900 telephone business. It’s not to sell or buy anything, but to conduct the new political party’s leadership vote next month. Unlike other political parties where local mem- bers choose delegates who then vole at a leadership convention, the phone-in ballot process is more de- mocratic, says Lore Sex- ton, the president of the Skeena Alliance consti- tuency association. “There was no way in ridings the size such as ours that we could set up polling stations in every community,” he said. “What each member will get is a PIN number and with the 1-900 num- ber, the results will be col- lected at the [June 24} convention.” . Sexton’s expecting at least 100,000 members to take part in the phone-in vote, And should there not be a first-ballot winner, there will be second round of voting on July 8. Sexton is still hoping one or alt of the leadership candidates will visit here early next month for the constituency association’s founding meeting to offici- ally create the Alliance party in the northwest since the Reform party de- cided to take on a new face and a new name. Sexton, who supports former Reform leader Preston Manning in his bid to lead the new party, be- lieves Manning has the support of the majority of Skeena Alliance members, Other contenders in- clude Alberta government treasurer Stockwell, Day, former Tory organizer Tom Long of Ontario and Keith... Martin, a B.C. Alliance::: -°: MP. People wishing to join the Alliance in time to vote have a deadline of June 17. The Reform party, which is strong in the west, transformed itself into the Alliance in a bid to establish itself in cen- tral and eastern Canada. It didn’t perform all that well during a federal by- election in Newfoundland, running behind established parties. The federai Progr- ess Conservatives retained the seat. How are : a doing? Political party gearing up for upcoming federal election ONE POLITICAL party in the northwest is already mak- ing plans for the next federal election. More than 200 members of the Christian Heritage Party (CHP) met in Smithers recently for the annual general meeting of its Skeena constituency association and to put in motion its election plans. The CHP ran 54 candidates across Canada in the last federal election in 1997, 14 of whom were in B,C., says Bulkley Valley resident Warren Vandenberg who is the president of the Skeena constituency association. “We have two people interested here in running and | know there’ll be a strong showing across B.C.,” he said during a trip to Terrace last week. Accompanying him was Fraser Valley resident Rod- ger Brown, a provincial organizer and candidate trainer for the CHP and a candidate himself for the next federal election, Brown warned against thinking that the CHP, regar- ded as right-wing Christian evangelical party, has an election platform similar to that of the Canadian Al- Hance (the former Reform party) on social and econo- mic issues. “The CHP’s agenda provides a clear voice for tradi- tional values in Canada, In a democracy, the govern- ment should reflect those values rather than oppose these values,” he said. “We've fairly well stake out our turf.” The main difference between the Canadian Alliance and the CHP is that the farm as accepted the idea thal unless it forms a government, it is irrelevant,” Brown added. “As a consequence it has moved to the left to the point it doesn’t represent that values of the average Ca- nadian.” “Our objective is not io dominate Canada, bui to have a voice for those traditional values,” said Brown. He painted to the Parliamentary vote recently on sa- meé-sex spousal benefits as an example of how the Cana- dian Alliance has positioned itself to be more attractive to voters. The vote took place before the Reform party changed its name and when Preston Manning was the leader. Instead of voting, Brown said Manning chose to ab- sent from Parliament. “He couldn’t vate ‘no’ and he couldn't vote ‘yes’ so he decided not be there,” said Brown. “So it’s clear they were willing to sell off traditional values in order to gain power at election time.” The CHP also believes land claims can be only set- tted when there is a reconciliation between natives and the rest of Canada. “We have to raise up and develop communities so they can once again be free and proud people,” said Brown, , “The solution is not to throw money at a problem.” The CHP in Skeena has run candidates in the federal elections of 1988, 1993 and 1997, OLDSMOBILE PUTS TECHNOLOGY IN THE PALM OF YOUR | ALERO GL The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, May 24, 2000 - AT] i 7 << ot : Ae Thank Yo The Dry Grad/Prom Committee wouid like to thank Dean Porter of Sears and Canada Safeway for their contributuions to the recent BBQ and raffle to raise funds for this year’s Dry Grad.
