Aé- The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, February 24, 1999 Aim in the right direction. Dear Sir: After mouths of reading CORRESPONDENCE FOR THE TERRACE STANDARD against it and it did not materialize, we letters in this paper that are often quite emotional accus- ing people of all kinds of things I have decided to'add my voice to the debate, _ The Mail Bag Perhaps it is unrealistic to hope that communities who are all focused, parochial and used While cveryone is éntitled . to their opinion it seems to me that statements made in public should at least reflect facts and reality, A case in point is Lorraine Fortner’s Feb. 10, 1999 |et- ter to the editor. She states . that the health council -is overpaid and impotent.° | I cannot speak’ for ali the members but my wife who is on the board, is not im.” potent and she, as all the board members, receives no salary, uo per diem, uo benefits, i. mo money whatsoever for their service. So why are they donating hundreds of hours of their. lime while getling only abuse and condemnation in return. They are doing this because they believe that they can make a difference and they want to see the best possible health care for our Skiers Dear Sir: I was appalled to read in The Terrace Standard that the Shames Mountain Ski Corp. is permitting the local snow- mobile association to hold its annual race during the regu- lar ski operating season. To me, this shows a distinct lack of appreciation for the regular skiing patrons from Terrace, Kitimat and Prince Rupert who, year after year, support Shames Mountain. Without this patronization, the ski hill would have folded years ago. Not only that, but the logistics and safety con- cers of holding a snowmobile event while skiers and boarders are on the mountain will be a nightmare. Imagine all the regular spring skiers and boarders driving up to the hill on Saturday morning. Mix in over 100 snow- mobiles, all of which must arrive by trailer or pickup. Now imagine the ski hill road is jammed, both parking lots over- flow down to the switchback with kids struggling with their boards and skis while machines tip by, And now a mass of machines, skiers, boarders, kids, and spectators converges at the bottom of the chairlift: No one can move — skiers and boarders finally make it onto the chair, only to listen to engines ripping up bump runs and smelling uoxious fumes. Local skiers and boarders will arrive at the top of the T- bar only to find out that all the bump runs, Borderline and. Back Eddy are closed, as the runout al. the bottom is needed for snowmobile access. Is'a safely issue thoy say so, those with the choice, go. touring behind the hill. But-no luck there either — the west Bowl is tracked up, and snow- mobiles can be seen heading along Zimmy Ridge in the distance, Guess it’s time to head home. Am I exaggerating the likely tun of events? Perhaps, but [Sy . Tania Millen, Terrace, B.C, (received via email) What nonsense Dear Sir: * This has got to be the limit of preposterous nonsense. Ou” a recent Wednesday nearly all TV and radio stations were devoting their newscast lime to the retirement of a certain Michael Jordan, U.S. basketball player. - Ofall the great and newsworthy items around this world, we are deluged by more American crap, Most Canadians must or should be sick of this saturation from the USA. For months it’s been Clinton and Lewinsky embroiled in their murky quagmire. Now our main media are devoting hours to this basketball player's retirement. Who cares? Just what the heck is going on? To allow such people.so much time airing their arrogance defies: all logic: These: overgrown, overpaid galloots have been wallowing Cin adulation and money long enough, for simply cuffing a ball ina glorified children’s game.
