TERRACE-- A recluse, a hermit and an eccentric could

bé some of the words used to describe Charles Patrick

Beaton...if you didn't know him. .
For those who did know him, however, Pat was a

thoughtful and kindly old man who would give you the shirt .

off his back and think nothing of it. os

Well, unfortunately, Pat is gone now, having died of
natural causes on Sunday, March 18, He never married so
there are nokinfolk In this area. He was 92 years old,

Being a bit of a jack of all trades, Pat was well known in
the Terrace and Burns Lake area for his handling and.
selling of goats and sheep. a

Some Terrace residents recall that it was risky business
getting downwind of Pat after he had finished working. with
the goats. No offense, Pat. .

One of the people that knew Pat in his Jast years in

‘Terrace was Mra. May, who used to be neighbours of Pat -

when he lived up on the topend of Merkley Road,

She recalls the days when Pat came to visit the family,
“He was great with the kids,” she recalls, “he would ait
down and tell them tales of what It was like when he was
young and how he travelled all over the world. Of course,
things were different back then, the opportunities to travel
were much easier.” 7

Pat used to drive into the interior, up to Ootea Lake and
buy his sheep and goats and bring them down to Terrace to
sell again. He did this quite a number of times over the
many summers that he spent in this area, and built up a
large tircle of aquaintances both here and in the Bulkley.

Beaton was a very independent man, not one to rely on
anyone else's help, But when it came to helping others, Pat
was the firat to offer his services, an
' “When newborn babies at the hospital couldn't: drink
prepared milk or their mother’s milk, then Pat would

always have some goat milk handy to donate for the use of _
- the hospital, And if he ever saw anyone walking while he

was driving his truck, he would always stop and offer thern

aride. That was Pat, ready to lend a hand,” remembers

Mrs. May.

She admits he wasa bit ofan eccentric, but explained that |

because of his independence, he preferred to live alone,
raising his goats, sheep and chickens.
Having #0 much time to himself, Pat spent a great many
hours buried in a book of onerort or another. ,
She remembers him as being well-versed in very many
subjects, a feature that enabled him to lead a conversation
on practicaily any topic. She isn't sure if it was his, but ahe

recalls seeing a degree in horticulture from the University
of Edinborough in his house as she was vistting one day.
She does know, though, that Pat was quite a farmer, relying

heavily on moon signs and natural farming methods ta reap

ao harvest, — ;

In the early years of bis life here in Terrace, Pat was
living on a 160 acrea of property up on the Bench. When he
became iii and had to stay in the hospital, Pat moved Into a
howe in Thornhill and spent his remaining years living

_ there.

Pat was born in Tipperary, Ireland on November 12, 1892.
His father died while Pat was still very young, and because
he didn’t like his step-father when his mother remarried,
decided that he would Jeave the home and strike out for
himself. .

Leaving Ireland and moving to England, Pat found.work
Jooking after the horses of a doctor who had the habit of

changing horses every day, He learned quite a bit about the -

animals from this experience. . .
. Sometime in 1005, Pat went south to Africa, to fight in the .

’ Boer War. 4

Says Mrs. May, “Back then, Pat told me, it didn’t matter
how old you were. If the job required someone older than
yourself, you lied about your age. If an employer was
looking for someone young, you did the same thing, lie

about your age. Pat was only 14 when he entéred the war,” .

However; shortly after going into the war, Pat left and
moved south to Spain, where he began working on
“package freighters", This lasted until 1906, when Pat

decided that the French Foreign Legion was for him. That

lasted until 1911, when Pat began moving to all points of the
globe. ;

During the next few years of his life, Pat would spend oaly
8 few years in each of the different lands that he found
himeelfin. He travelled to England, Spain, South Amerlea,
Ireland, Tibet, India, and Australia.

In 1924, Pat came to Canada, and spent six years working
his way across the provinces to B.C. When he arrived in
Vancouver, he turned south and headed through the States
and down to Australia, again. - :

When the mood to settie down came over Pat, he chose to
call Terrace his home, and in 1634, moved to the area and
began working for Little, Haugland and Kerr, a local
saymill, — ;

Tn 1840; he moved to Clair Giggy’s operation and stayed
there until his retirement in 1962. ,

Pat never married, and has no kinfolk Hving in the area,

and even though he kept a low profile, he will be missed by
the people that considered him thelr friend,

"A lot of the students
from these communities,”

he saya, “don't get a chance -

to get out and travel... This
wilk «give them- an
opportunity to do exactly
that.” . a , .

He further explains that it

fund-raising.”

Local resident, Patrick Beaton, passed away at the age of
$200 Sunday, March 18, after having spend the last 48 years
of his life in the Terrace area. ;

To raise funds for the trip

Nurse Robert Diaz
found guilty ©

RIVERSIDE, Calif. (AP) — A judge found nurse Robert -
Diaz guilty Thursday of murdering 12 elderly patienta with.

overdoses, of a heart drug at. two Riverside County

hospitals. . :
Superior Court Judge John Barnard also made a finding

of special circumstances — multiple murders — which -

could iead to imposition of the death penalty.
“The court, having considered the matter, finds the.

‘defendant guilty on each of counts one through 12,"":,
Barnard said, concluding the five-month trial. -

During final arguments, Deputy District Attorney
Patrick Magers called Diaz “nothing but a killer.”

But public defenders Michael Lewis and John Lee termed |

the case against their client circumstantial.

Barnard will alto preside over the penalty phase of the.
