Freak Accident Injures Camp Chairman Hanna - Camp Committee Chairman Bill Hanna, steel spar hook- tender at B.C. Forest Pro- duct’s Port Renfrew opera- tion, was injured on the job March 30 by a flying chunk. An investigation of the acci- dent disclosed that Bill was standing on a windfall root on a ridge ninety feet across from the mainline. The rig- ging picked up a chunk on its way to the woods and threw ~ it through the air approxi- mately one hundred and sev- enty feet striking him. The force of the blow knocked Bill ten feet from the windfall to the position he was found in. The chunk weighed approximately 150 pounds. Regional President Jack Moore, Local 1-80 President Weldon Jubenville and Safety Director Jack Mumm who toured the operation next day, participated in the investiga- tion and agreed that Bill Hanna had been in the proper position on the job. The general concensus was that it had been a freak acci- dent and no recommendation could be made to prevent fu- ture accidents of this nature. The two other companies blamed were the builders, Stolberg Mill Construction Ltd., and the building See ers, ‘AMFAB Ltd. The cornoner’s jury stated MB&PR was remiss in not de- manding—or supplying proper engineering services at the job. The deceased, Arnold King, and the three injured mem- bers were on the roof of the building when it gave way. Witnesses testified during the inquest that a contributing factor in the accident was the weight of a full load of deck- ing piled on the roof. PORT RENFRE W loggers hear Local 1-80 Safety Direc- tor Jack Mumm report on the progress of his tour of the camps and mills in the Local Union. who is a hooktender at B.C. F.P.’s Port Renfrew opera- tion, obtained leave of ab- sence from work and went on the Local’s payroll for five weeks, the period. of time -considered necessary. to com- plete the tour. During these five weeks, Jack addressed the crews, checked their safe working habits and listened to their safety suggestions and grievances. His working day started at 5 am. and ended anywhere from 11 p.m. to 1 or 2 the next morning. Only a person highly dedi- cated to his job could have maintained the pace set by Jack for himself and this dedication of purpose is one of the reasons he was elected Safety Director of the Local last fall. Local President Weldon Jubenville recently — invited Regional President Jack Moore to accompany Jack Mumm and himself when they visited the Port Renfrew op- eration, to see at first hand how the crash programme worked. The three officials, with the complete cooperation of the B.C.F.P. management, made a day-long tour of the opera- tion from the landings to the dry land sorting area. ‘They concluded the visit with a safety meeting held in the Camp that night which was attended by seventy-five members of the crew. President Moore reported afterwards that it was evident Jack Mumm was doing an ad- mirable job. He stated that Mumm’s popularity with the crew and his obvious enthusi- asm for the job were bound to have a stimulating effect on the overall safety programme of Local 1-80. Local President Weldon Jubenville said that while it is too early to properly evalu- ate the worth of the project, every indication suggests the results will be good.
