Airport users to pay more because of new fee plan AIRPORT PASSENGERS will be paying more come mid- August thanks lo a new user fee. The Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society is going to charge airlines $8 for cach amiving or departing passenger as of Ang. 15, Canadian Regional Airlines and Air B.C, now pay a fee for cach aircraft that lands based on size and weight and a fee to use the terminal based on the number of seats on each plane, This fee is now included in the cost of tickets. The Terrace-Kitimat Airport Society wants to charge per passenger because both airlines have switched to smaller alplanes recently, causing a direct dollar hit to the society’s revenues, As well, Air B.C. has cut the number of flights it makes to Terrace each week, Airport sociely chairman Frank Hamilton said the sociely budgeted $574,000 in landing and terminal fees but projects it'll lose $280,000 of that amount over the course of a budget year because of the switch to smaller aircraft aid from flight reductions. That $280,000 loss works out to approximately onc- quarler of the socicty’s annual budget. That's enough to place he society, which took over operations at the airport this spring, in deep debt, The $8-fee, which includes GST, is based on an average 90,000 passengers a year, generating $720,000 in annual revenues, It’s more than what was anticipated under the old systems but is needed to provide for minor and Thajor capital work at the airport, said Haniilton. Although the recent historical annual average passenger count has been 95,000, Hamilton said it's more prudent to budget at the 90,000 figure given the current economic situation, ‘“‘We don’! have those historical numbers right now,” he said. Another society board member, Roger Borycki, said pas- Sengers are already paying for landing and terminal fees through what airlines add to the price of their tickets. In effect, he said passengers will pay an extra $1.62 per trip to provide for an annual minor and major capital al- location of approximately $146,000, This amount is the difference between the $574,000 under the old fee struc- ture and the $720,000 expected under the new one. Borycki and Hamilton said some type of user fee in- crease was planned ail along by the society, One of the first minor capital projects is the resurfacing of the area in front of the terminal building where aircraft now come to a halt. Canadian Regional Airlines spokesman Dennis Erickson said it'll break out ihe passenger fee and list it as a separate item. Canadian Regional will then deduct whatever cost there is now in landing and terminal fees now embedded in ils tickets and transfer the amount, plus the amount of the increase, to the separate surcharge item. kkk hk The Kamloops airport is switching lo a per passenger rate July 20 of $9 per retum passenger. Canadian Regional, in turn, has tacked on $2 to cover GST and the cost of tak- ing in the $9. This represents an increase of about $5 overall given that passengers were already paying for land and terminal fees in their ticket prices, AirBC cuts jet ELEVEN YEARS of jet ser- vice on the part of AirBC ended Sunday, July 4 when the last of its Bae-146 four- engine jets took off from the Terrace Kitimat airport. Alvin Zaharko of Farwest Bus Lines said in the last year and a half, on average, only switched from a jet io a 37-passenger Dash plane,”' said Zaharko. “It's more so now that AIBC is going to be making one-way trips to and from here on Friday and Saturday,’’ “The last 22 times we ran the service for AirBC flights, we carried 24 people. Those numbers were just abysmal,” said Zaharko of that passenger run. Farwest is maintaining its Kitimat-airport bus service for Canadian Regional Airlines.
