Aé - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, April 12, 2000 Suspension affects us all Dear Sir: The suspension of Dio- nys de Leeuw and the sup- pression of his work on the grizzly bear population (The Terrace Standard, March 29,) reveal once again a disturbing reality for and about Canadians. _ TL agree with Bruce Hill that scientists must have the freedom to comment on government policy without fear of reprisal. As Hill notes, the absence of that freedom and the pre- sence of that fear is cen- sorship,; whether imposed by the government or by the scientists on them- selves. There is a deeper issue here, however, which im- plicates all of us in the continuation of the censor- Safer streets needed Dear Sir: There’s been a rash of stalkings in- Terrace of the females of our humble community. It has been estimated in the past while that approx- imately 6-12 women have . reported being followed by faceless males in the com- munity. In’ addition, I’ve heard of the recent home invasion involving a woman being attacked by. a male assailant. This absolutely disturbs me, and downright angers me. These “men” (if that’s © what they’re called, I'll just cali them. cowards), are jeopardizing the safety of many people whom I care about, as do many other people in the narth- west. - It seems rather unfair that many. females walk in fear at night of being at- tacked by these perverts. ] will not stand idle and wait while our mothers, girlfriends, “sisters; wives, daughters” are’: ‘constantly walk in- possible danger in the early evening. — This community defini- tely has to keep an open eye for these faceless cowards, for that is what they-are as of this moment - — faceless. These guys are hurting the credibility of all males in our society, choose not to be labelled as of the same gender as these. people. , I. hope they are read these very words. If any- — body comes in harm’s way from these antics, I’m afraid’ that the justice sys- tem may be your only sal- vation, for there are many, many guys waiting for you, for a lynch mob can be. formed in less than an hour. Any ideas from the pub- lic concerning their opi- nions to this matter, 1 re- quest, for if we can formu- late some. ideas we can. at least. make it safe for the community to walk the streets of our very own town. The government exists because we fund it. Our taxes pay these people — we are their employers. Does it seem a sound prin- ciple of business and man- agement that the employ- ges are not answerable to their employers? Of course not. Environment ministry spokesman Alex Dabrows- ki’s. comment that de Leeuw's activism is “an internal personnel matter” on which they “don't com- ment” is insubordination in one of our employees. Dabrowski is not him- self directly responsible, however; bureaucratic practice at present permits it, And we accept it, This insubordination and bureaucralic practice is the core of the. problem. We are all familiar with the current pledges by all the -political parties to “transparency” in govern- ment, but their vested in- terest allows them te go only so far. Non-partisan, publicly funded reports such as de Leeuw's should be made public as a mat- ter of course. We pay these people to provide us with this information - it is ours. Historically, Canadians have had difficulty with this concept of ownership of our bureaucracy and our ministries, Political par- ties, as private entities and when governing, have nur- tured the separation to fur- ther their private agendas, and we have come to ac- cept that as natural bur- eaucratic practise, It is not.
