The 34-foot fishing boat, Nishga Girl, will be part of a Canadian pavilion display- . ing artifacts from across the country. Each ~ artifact will tell a part of Canada’s history. ...rhe museum was originally going to build a gillnctter and make up a story, but George Hays, director of the Northwest Maritime Museum, proposed the pavilion “se a real boat. *¢Gillnetters were a big deal here at one _..time,!” Hayes said. ““Nishga Girl will tell a real story of B.C. and fishing and boat building skills,”’ The 39-year old gillnetter, is one of 200 fishing boats built by Japanese Canadian Jack Tasaka, who lives in Prince Rupert. He made the boat in 1960 for Nisga’a com- fisherman Harry Nyce of “‘Tasaka’s story would symbolize one of the best gillnetters on the coast,’” Hayes said. ‘‘He fished up and down the whole BC Coast,” it would also tell the story of how Japa- nese Canadians were persecuted by the fed- eral government during WWII — Tasaka was forced ta move to Lillooet during the war. He then returned to the North in 1949. ‘Japanese people are a significant part of our heritage and so are the Nisga’a,”’ Hayes said. Nisga’a commercial fisherman Harry Nyce and his family used the boat for 30 years. The boat is presently being restored by the Tasaka family. Red cedar planks arc being replaced where necessary and the oak ribs are being steamed and reworked. A ceremony last Salurday in Port Edward marked the transfer of the boat to the musc- um, Nishga Girl will be loaded Sept. 26 onto a train going to Quebec.
