management solution his working time. And those num- bers, he says, have been consistent since he began logging his land in 1945. - ce Wilkinson has discovered a num- ber of cost saving features in his type of operation. Road costs are low when compared to his produc- tion. Because he selectively logs a small area he only had to build one toad which he uses for every har- vest. Selective logging offers an another advantage. Nature takes care of all regeneration, he has never had to plant a tree. He has a few sheep that take care of the weeding, He says one sheep for every three acres is ideal, And he takes care of thinning, pruning and culling himself. Wilkinson says that his type of operation would work well on a 500 to 600 acre plot of land. It would keep two people "fully occupied", he says. As far as the. value of his type of operation in the province, Wilkinson is an TERRACE excellent faller, a logging operator and a forester, and he offers this prophecy for anyone who cares to listen: "The alternative is no forest at all. The Romans nearly two thou- sand years ago logged Lebanon, North Africa and the now barren Aegean Islands by the same methods used in B.C. today. Clear- cutting was just as devastating then as now and we turned most of that area into a desert. We are, one might say, two thousand years behind in our thinking on forestry. Libya is just now beginning to get a forest back, and is improving its climate and its agriculture at the same time. Far too much of the Roman logging is still desert. In B.C. we are now creating desert areas.” If Wilkinson is right, Woodlot operations may be more than sim- ply an altemative to other forms of logging.
