6 Terrace Review — Wednesday, Match 29,,1989. ~The way I see it... by Stephanie Wiebe I can’t believe it. For weeks now, I’ve been straining my brain, for an interesting column about Baster. Should it be amusing, Or serious? A serious Easter piece would have to be ’ religious, and there would be a lot of that around. An amusing piece could be difficult: what’s so amusing about Easter? Oh sure, the kids are cute, watch- ing for bunnies, and hunting _. eggs. But what else is there to say? I thought about it for weeks, I'd lie in bed at night, think- ing about Easter. I supposed the Easter egg dying ritual is a bit comical, with énthusiastic pre- -schoolers and fragile eggs. Except for the clean-up. I remembered the year that my seven-year-old found all the | hidden eggs, while the two-— year-old screamed hysterically: because she wasn’t as quick. That was not amusing at the time. ‘Meanwhile, I played around _ with a‘column on “‘barf’’. I find the word: “barf” funny, “especially since kids prefer it to | the proper terminology. J kept. ‘ the ‘‘barf’’ column around for an easy deadline, while I con- __ centrated on Easter. The days flew past, the _ weeks went on. I knew that Easier was early this year, ard the pressure was building. I sent in my ‘‘barf’? column, thinking I had another week to work on Easter, glad I had that. one ready to give me more time to think. Meanwhile, there - were meetings to go to, chil- dren to chauffeur about, piles - of dirty laundry to deal with, © social obligations to be met. Then, like a rotten Easter " egg, it hit me. It was too late. Easter would be gone by.the — time this column would hit the ~ pages. I had done the unmen- tionable — I had desecrated "Easter. J HAD WRITTEN A COLUMN ABOUT ‘‘BARF” FOR EASTER!! . Talk about embarrassing. Wait ’til my mother finds out. How could this have hap- pened? I feel so disrespectful, so anti-Christian, so --blasphemous. ~ Everyone will know. Especially'since that lady wrote in to complain and made the newspaper put my picture on top of this column. They’ll whisper and point-at me now. ‘That’s the broad who wrote about “barf” for Easter”... ‘Some people have no respect.’” I’li never be able to smile at old ladies again. Peo- ple will pull their children away from me, in case my evilness is contagious. Nuns will hold up crosses to ward me off, and my neighbors will spit at me. How . could I write about ‘“‘barf’’ for Easter? PII have to go into hiding now. I’ll become a recluse until this Easter-barf thing blows over. Will I ever live it down? © Oh geez. A prime ex- ample is the highways. The high- ways department wasn’t doing a great job, but I think it is worse - since privatization. . The new company feels ‘they are doing a job as good or better in some areas than the Ministry. The new company says that the’ potholes can’t be fixed in the ‘winter. These potholes haven’t _ just happened over the winter, and there is always snow and ice on the road in the winter. I feel the roads are in bad shape and something should be - done about it.
