There are two important things that set Wendy’s book apart from the proliferation of Olympic publications. First, she went to the sources that should know best about each sport: the athletes. The material on each sport was meticulously research- ed, then reviewed by prominent Canadian sports figures. — As far as I know, this is the first such effort where athletes have vetted the galleys. The result is an entertaining and ac- curate recounting of Canada’s colorful participation in the Olympics. It is also important to note that Wendy’s book has been a volunteer effort. He surprised me when he said “‘Nordic com- bined.”” Like many Canadians I thought this would be a non- event. Let the Europeans win the medals in this strange hybrid sport that will only have one Canadian competing. But here was an Olympic downhill cham- pion outlining a sport that had thrilled thousands at the 1987 World Nordic championships. What has changed the Nordic combined is the ‘‘Gunderson Method”’ of scoring. The event starts with a traditional 70 metre jump on Day One (Feb. 27 at Canada Olympic Park). But here is where the fun begins. Kermodes started by downing Henry Wisewood of Calgary 88-76 in their eight- team series of the best teams in Alberta and Saskatchewan, plus Terrace.. They held a 48-34 lead at the half. Teredos trounced As far as the Terrace Teredos junior mixed waterpolo team is concerned, their recent trip to the B.C. championships at Vic- toria was strictly a learning ex- perience. They played and lost three games — 8-2 to Burnaby, 17-4 to Vancouver and 17-2 to Coquitlam. Coach John Pollack said the team should do much better at the Northern B.C. Winter Games starting next week. Harpel Manhas, who was high scorer for the Cal boys in all . three games, fired in 24 points. Steve. Dewacht and Dion Orbell each contributed 18. Kermodes met their match in game two when they blew a- 31-30 halftime lead and lost 62-53 to Ross Shepherd of Ed- -monton, Manhas had 19 points and Dewacht 15. After this semi-final loss, they took on the host team for third and fifth place. Bishop Carroll took a 39-30 lead at the half and went on to a 76-55 victory. Manhas paced Kermodes with 17 points.
