On Friday, © June 20 over 200 students | graduated from | Caledonia Senior Secondary School Denise Therrien and Craig Soutar attend grad 86 ceremonies. Five years in high school and five awards for the most outstanding athlete. That’s at least a local record, and one that talented all-round athlete Val Philpot can be proud of as she picked up her fifth straight outstanding athlete award at the June 25 Caledonia Senior High School awards ceremonies. Philpot started col- lecting these MVP honors in Grade 8 at Skeena Junior High and hasn’t missed since then. If she hopes to keep this mark intact, Philpot will have to pick up an award at the University of British Columbia where she’ll be attending on a basketball scholarship starting this fall. In addition to the top sports award at the 17th also won an athletic large block award, and won top honors in the Physical Education Department’s Commun- ity Recreation 12 class. She was also honored by the Terrace District Teacher’s Association with a $300 scholarship. Philpot saw four of her Kermode girls’ basketball teammates Philpot wins fifth outstanding award annual awards day, Val - announce that they had also picked up scholar- ships. Leona Tank received one for basket- bal! at Grande Prairie College in Alberta, and Caroline Hendry has a basketball scholarship for Capilano College in North Vancouver. Jaci Sturn will be at- tending Fraser Valley College at Abbotsford for some more basket- ball. Colleen Anderson has a scholarship to Cariboo College ia Kamloops, but it’s for volleyball and not basketball. At the time of this report she had not decided whether to ac- cept it or not. This is quite an accomplishment for the Kermode girls’ hoop squad, who placed fifth in B.C. last season despite difficulties aris- ing out of the teacher’s work-to-rule situation. Other honors went to Kevin Maki for athletic service, and a trio for most sportsmanlike athletes — Satnam Manhas, Jaci Sturn and Brent Volk.
