TERRACE — A pro- posal to confine tobacco smoking to restricted areas of Northwest Com- munity College received ratification from the col- lege board at the board’s June 14 meeting. The of- ficial policy, beginning in the fall term of this year, will prohibit smok- ing except in one designated area of each building on the campus. College bursar Geoff Harris told the board that the policy came about as the result of a staff petition, followed by the appointment of a committee which drafted the proposal. A posted notice of the non- smoking proposal, Har- ris reported, drew only one letter of opposition. Ratification of the policy was unanimous, Degree awarded The degree of Doctor of Philosophy, Chem- istry, was conferred upon Bay Wassink Jr. during the ceremonies at the University of British Columbia on May 28, 1986. Wassink graduated from Caledonia Senior High School in 1976 and received his Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry, Honors Pro- gram, in 1980, at which time he received the Society of Chemical In- dustry Merit Prize for at- taining the highest standing in Honors Chemistry. Wassink is presently engaged in post-doctoral research at Queen’s University in Kingston, Ontario.
