While this is a new burden for the lot own- ers it should also create a new interest in the welfare of the town. Since the people are now paying all the taxes to the government they should have something to say as to the expendi- ture of the money that may be appropriated for the town and district, In the past the appropri- ations for this particular part of the district have been ridiculously small and practically ‘all the im- provements that have been made in the town have been made by the people themselves, They have built roads, sidewalks, drains, ete., and have even built roads outside the townsite for the benefit of the general public. The road to the high level bridge, which is only a winter road, _and a dry weather road, is used whenever possible by the government teams and the road superin- tendent and his staff. The high level bridge is always used by the government's outfits when the road to itis passable. Yet that same govern- ment has never contributed a nickel towards the construction or maintenance of that road or the | bridge. On the other hand they made a deliber- ate attempt to frighten others from using it, by placing ridiculously low carrying capacity upon ‘the structure. At the same time their own teams have hauled twice the loads over the bridge that the government said was permissable; and not only one load, but. two loads at a time and close together. Now that the citizens of New Hazelton and the lot owners in the townsite are being di- rectly taxed they have a-right to sav where mon-: ey appropriated for the district is to be expended. is really to be hoped that Mr. Pugsley’s infotma- quite enough explaining to doin British Columbia. ‘for this district during the past two years. Pugsley i is a very. naughty’ man. In the Dominion house of. commons recently. he asked some very impertinent questions regard- ing the purchase of two submarines by Sir Rich- ard McBride, premier of British ‘Columbia, for the dominion naval ‘service. ‘In: the first place Mr. Pugsley wanted to know what right; a4 provin- cial premier had to purchase submarines for the dominion. He also wanted to “know what price was paid for them—what the company got and what the dominion government paid. “He had in- formation to the effect, he said, that two cheques were issued by the government, one for $900, 000, while he. understood that the sum of $1,050,000 was mentioned as the purchase price, He wanted | to. know what .was done with the rest of the t money.
