The driver of a car com- mandeered by St. Louis in north-end Montreal told police the escapee had asked for quarters, fuelling speculation he was headed for the Laurentian Autoroute, a toll road and ihe main route north. The chase began shortly before noon Saturday when St. Louis escaped from a provincial detention centre in Sorel, 70 kilometres ortheast of the cily, police said, He was due to be arraigned today on charges arising from an armed robbery. St. Louis was also being held on charges of sexual assault, illega) possession of weapons, car theft and ex- tortion, He was arrested in Montreal last month, After escaping from prison armed with a .45-calibre pistol, he commandeered a ear and selzed the two oc- cupants as hostages. He abandoned both car and hostages alter reaching 4 wooded area near Con- trecoeur, about halfway between Sorel and Montreal. Provincial police officer Gilles Nadeau and his tracking dog Tex were shot after they spotted the prisoner in the wooded area, police said. Tex spotted the escapee first and was shot as he approached. Then Nadeau went down, wounded in the arm and leg. As Nadeau lay helpless nearby, St, Louis demanded that two policemen and a journalist join him ~ as hostages in a marked provincial police car “to get out of the woods without more shooting.” Michel Temblay, a photographer for the weekly tabloid Dimanche-Matin, said he agreed to go along bezause “I wanted to do something” to help. The car headed for Montreal with St. Louis in the back seat covering Tremblay, Sgt. Gilles Frigon and Lieut. Gilles Belley, Belley managed to retain possession of his police handgun during the ride, but St. Louis took Frigon’s gun shorily after the car left the woods, Tremblay said. “St, Louls wanted us to. head for Montreal so he could visit his mother,” Tremblay said. ‘‘Through the whole trip he said he just wanted to visit cher and then kill ef ..During the: ride,:, Belley . tried to dissuade the escapee .. from killing himself, and St. Louls “said that he shot Nadeau accidently - that he didn’t want to hurt him,” When the sergeant got out of the car and made off, “I ran too," Tremblay said. “Frigon went south and I went north, ; 1978 PRINCE EXHIBITION ' AUGUST 10, 11, 12, and 13, 1978 EXHIBITION PARK PRINCE GEORGE, B.C. V6C 1S4 Plane’s load not cause of Toronto crash TORONTO (CP) - The president of the Canadian Airline Pilots Associatior ‘ says the load distribution on the DC-9 aircraft that erashed at Toronto In- ternational Airport on June 26 was not a factor in the falal accident. Ken Maley said in an in- terview Sunday: “I can't - even see it as a contributing factor,” . _ The Sun said in published reports “Sunday that two printouts from Air Canada’s central computer indicate the aircraft had too much weight distributed toward its nose when it crashed on takeoff, killing twa passengers and injuring the other 105 persons on board, The newspaper quated an unidentified Air Canada loading supervisor as saying the load distribulion would have made it difficult for the pilot to pull up the aircraft's nose for liftoff and that about 500 pounds should have been moved to the plane's back end. t Gc } ‘pe, Air dan, *uiPaa transpe.. ..unistry said Sunday they did not know if the aircraft was heavy at the nose end. Maley said 500 pounds would have been a negligible . weight but that it could have given the aircraft problems on rotation of the nose if the weight was at extreme nose- down position. . However, Maley said: “They never got to that point on the runway. “They aborted takeoff well below that rotation speed." He said that as far as he knows, from discussions with the crew, all takeoff procedures were properly followed. However, ‘"‘something happened on the aircraft to give the captain cause to abort.” PURCHASES PLANES LONDON (AP) — British Airways said Monday it will buy 19 Boeing 737s—worth $225.6 million—and take delivery on some of the planes before the end of next year.
