It is therefore no surprise that the word has gone out to Social Crediters to vote Conservative if they are not prepared to vote Social Credit. ae All this should be warning aplenty to those who may be tempted by Diefenbaker’s plea to “give his gov- ernment a chance,” that the old political shell game between the Conservative, Liberal and Socred parties can only end with the vot- ers losing. EDITORIAL PAGE It's a falsehood URING his. recent visit to Van- couver, Federal Works Minister Gordon Churchill stated there is “nothing to prevent Canadian busi- ness men from dealing with Red China.” That is a brazen falsehood! Since the People’s Republic of China was established in 1949, both Liberals and Tories have religious- ly followed U.S. dictates to Cana- da’s detriment: ‘No truck or trade with Communist China.” At U.S. dictation, both Liberals and Tories have consistently refus- ed to accord diplomatic recognition to a nation of 600-million people, itself a restrictive factor in trade relations. There are letters on file in Van- couver export and business offices from former Trade Minister C. D. Howe, vetoing exports of lumber, copper, small coast-wise craft and other items, on the grounds that these were “strategic” materials. During last year’s federal elec- tion campaign the same brand of Tory and Liberal humbug was handed out to the electorate. Speak- ing at Gibsons, Liberal stalwart Jimmy Sinclair opined there should be no difficulty in getting the “first steps” to trade with China under way, “if the Chinese behave them- selves with respect to international conventions.” That is on a par with Churchill’s falsehoods of a “no ban” on trade with China. Meantime a great potential mar- ket for Canada in’ People’s China : is being lost by Conservative and Liberal default. Mass unemploy- ment and industrial stagnation now demonstrate how greatly Canada needs this market, now withheld by Conservative and Liberal subor- dination to U.S. cold war policies, foreign and domestic — a fact which can no fonger be covered up by Tory lies and demagogy, or by Liberal strictures on Chinese “‘be- havior.” Tom McEwen N ONE of his many excuses as to why the U.S., Britain and other “God-fearing” states should not participate in any summit talks with . Soviet leaders, President Eisenhower opined that “...the future belongs, not to the concept of the regimented atheistic state, but to the people—the God-fearing people of all the world.” Addressing a farm confer- ence in the Byelorussian Re- public a few weeks ago, N.S. Krushchev, first secretary of the Soviet Communist party had some pointed things to say about these “God-fearing” spokesmen of the “free” West. Being a frank blunt man, Krushchev stated the case without any pretensions to righteousness. It is not generally known, and if it were there would be small chance of our “God- fearing” monopoly press or our pious politicians publicly ad- mitting the fact, that the per- centage of church-goers in the Soviet Union is probably a good deal higher than in this country. But it is part of our hypocritical heritage from cap- italism to be experts in spot- “ting the “mote” in our broth- er’s eye, but blind to the can- ting “beam” in our own. “Apparently,” said Krush- chev to the _ Byelorussian farmers, “Mr. President wants to discredit us somehow in the eyes of public opinion. He wants to emphasize that you cannot come to terms with the Soviet leaders because they do not believe in God. He seems to imply that a government with atheistic views does evil, while a gov- ernment’ that believes in God allegedly does good. “The men who say they be- lieve in God and are guided, allegedly, by the principles of . God started the war of ag- gression against Egypt. It was not the godless people, not the Soviet government, that be- gan the war, but Mr. Eden, the British prime minister, and Guy Mollet, the French premier, who, after genuflec- tions before the cross, ordered British and French troops to Cairo and to slay peaceful people women, old people, and children. “Or take this issue. Govern- ments who declare that they believe in God are going on now with the blood-spilling war in Algeria. The troops of these governments, composed of people who ‘believe’ in God, also have in their midst priests who bless the killing of people and pray for the victory of the weapons being used to slay the defenseless Arabs in Algeria. “British aircraft bomb the villages of the small Yemen- ese state and kill children and old people, but this is not counted a violation of religi- ous morals, because it is peo- ple with dark skins who are dying from the bombs.” Kruchchev said much more about the “God-fearing” peo- ple President Eisenhower ex- tols as the custodians of his “future.” He drew attention to the fact that it was “God- fearing” Harry §S. Truman, then U.S. president, who ord- ered atom bombs dropped on Nagasaki, killing countless thousands in one_ blinding flash of utter destruction, and condemning others to years of agonizing suffering and slow death. All done by a “God- fearing” haberdasher. This pretense of “godliness” by H-bomb capitalist govern- ments and their hangers-on, is by all counts the most hy- pocritical and contemptible. Krushchev could have gone much further and told his audience that every atrocity committed upon defenseless people everywhere by capital- ist governments, is done with the “moral” pretense of “god- liness” to cover up their in- famies. When the imortal Bard of Avon wrote into one of his great dramas that “the devil can cite Scripture for his purpose,’ he probably didn’t know just how accurately he was describing the “God-fear- ing” missile-minded charlatans of today, who put the stamp of their “religion” and their “God” upon every nuclear warhead they plan to use just as they do upon their currency.
