ZIMMERMAN INVESTIGATORS are zeroing in on the drive line system of a helicopter that crashed north of Terrace Aug. 2° leaving its pilot recovering from burns and other injuries. =: - Investigators. from the National Transportation ‘Safety Board were at the scene of the wreckage Aug. 4 and Sth trying to under- stand. what led to the, crash and burning of the Hughes 500 helicopter owned by “Terace-based Quantum He- licopters.. z Investigators only have smal] fraction of what is left of the helicopter available to analyze, says. safety board investigator Alec Moffat. _ “IT would say. that 90 per cent of it had burned in the post-crash fire,” he said last “We’re interested in what we call the driveline system which includes the main rotors and the tail ro- | ” tor. Innitial reports from the safety board indicated the pilot may have had a slin- gload of some sort hanging -- beneath’ it; as the accident occurred, ‘but Moffat says “that’s: ‘not the case. House “He wasn’t carrying a slingload,” he says, adding the helicopter was landing to pick up passengers wait- ing on the ground. The pilot was en route to an Eagle Plains mineral ex- ploration site,to pick up two geologists. The helicopter apparently did not fall to the ground from a great distance, rather the incident occured just-as the helicopter touched down, Moffat explains. «Both skids were on the ground as if he was ready to pick up the first passenger,” he says, adding the chop- per’s rotors would still have . been rotating very. quickly. “If something goes wrong with the drive line you will lose directional and stabil- ity control and you'can lose control of the helicopter.” ” With the accident happen- ing so near to the ground, the ‘pilot was able to escape from the helicopter: soon after an explosion ripped through the chopper. Fortunately for the pilot, whose name has not been released, the geologists on the ground were able to ° give him first aid assistance before B.C, Ambulance Ser- -vice paramedics arrived to transport him to Mills Me- — arrest | ordered here ‘OA LOCAL WOMAN caught , .on video by several ‘surveil- . Lake is about 45 minutes north of Terrace and lies within’ Nisga’a Memorial Lava Bed Park. The Jake has good cutthroat trout fishing and Dolly Varden can also be caught there, says Kevin Beedle from Walmart. When looking for good places to fish, he suggests searching for areas with large _weed beds — preferably sub-surface weeds. During the hatches, he suggests fly fish- ers try.a mosquito or mayfly pattern. Try fishing these dry flies along the edge of . the weeds, which he describes as important feeding areas for the trout. ‘Lure fishers can trya small mepps or roost- . er tail, and Beedle says that trailing the lure with a worm really helps. Fish inventories of the lake reveal a wide range of species are present.
