A16 - The Terrace Standard, Wednesday, December 20, 1995 Council Shorts Water fluoridation TO FLUORIDATE or not to fluoridate. That could’ well’ be the question on ballots before volers next year. The city would save $27, 000 a year if it stopped fluo- ridating local drinking water. But council bas agreed lo study t the issue further be- fore making any decision on going to referendum. The idea of ending-watér fluoridation here -——- which has been in place since residents voted for it in 1964 - is raised as a possible cost-cutting measure in this year’s organizational review at city hall, Councillor Ed Graydon predicted a messy battle over the issue. “T think we should leave well enough alone,”’ he | said. ‘‘As soon as you start cutting into health areas, people get irate about it. Nobody’s making it an Issue. Why are we making it an issue?** © Councillor David Hull said three-quarters of BC. 8 municipalities no longer fluoridate water now. “T don’t care to dismiss it out of hand,’ said Ruth Hallock. ‘‘I’d like to hear the pros and cons. from’ people with some level of expertise.” Director of Engineering Stew Christensen said in the last area that debated the issue — Comox Valley — _ dentists and orthodonists lined up on the Yes side against environmentalists and chiropractors. Christensen said a referendum is required if the city decides to end @uoridation, . “It was put in by referendum, so it has to come out by referendum,” he said. Thombill’ s water supply isn’t fluoridated. - Seniors query trash: SENIOR CITIZENS at Twin River Estates want to know whether they” re Boing to continue getting free garbage pickup. © City council decided this year to continue to give free pickup to seniors who own their own homes. But Twin River Estates has dumpsters and requires commercial garbage pickup — noi the city’ § residential service. In the last year, Riverside Disposal has collected ; gar- bage from Twin River Estates for free in exchange for a tax deductible donation receipt at the end of the year. But the company isn’t willing to maintain the status quo, said Wilma Costain of the Skeena Senior Citizens Housing Society. — . “Tn short they would like to aet paid,’” she explained, - Council referred the matter to its finance commiltee. ‘No’ to trail work THE CIFY can’t do anything ‘to improve the Indian Face trail up the bench because it’s on private land, School board chairman John Pousette wanted the city to either widen Lanfear Hill or do something to im- prove the security of children using the trail after a Sept. 19 atiack ona high school girl there. . City “councillors said Lanfear Hill will someday be rebuilt, But the city docsn’t own the Land the trail is on, and would expose itself to liability if it did work there. ‘It’s not our responsibility,” said Ruth Hallock. He introduced a motion at the Dec, 11 city council meeting that council tell the province photo radar isn’t wanted here and that the city would prefer to see in- creased drug enforcement ahead of the new Traffic Safety Initiative. It was seconded by Rich McDaniel, but was voted down by Val Gearge, David Huil, Ruth Hallock .and Ed Graydon, Gordon Hull called photo radar and other measures targetting drivers a thinly disguised cash grab. He argued drugs constitute a much greater problem for society in general than " speeding, and said drug taf. - ficking fines are “ridiculously low.’* _ Why is the government attacking just the driving public and not the drug- using public,” he demanded. ‘‘I'd like ta see people call out for similar effort on drugs.”” Hull said police traffic ef- forts are already working. He said there has been a steady decline in traffic fa- talitics in recent years, while the number of people dying of dmg overdoses or getting AIDS from dirty needles ‘‘is Still spiralling up.”’ Other councillors said . they agreed drug enforce- ment could be toughter, but said =the —_anti-speeding campaign makes sense.
