The headlines reach out to grab our attention, People’ are more and. more concerned about nutrition in the nineties, but they have a hard time sorting out the nutritional truths from the myths and misconceptions, We’re deluged with information these days, and it can all lead to confusion about nutrition. — A good example is all of the ‘“*Cholesteral Free’ foods that are on the shelves. these days. Many are made from vegetable products, which never had any cholesterol in the first place. Others are high in fat, which our bodies make into cholesterol. That means that they’re actually less healthy for you than lower fat’ foods, even though they're © “cholesterol, free’. Another common myth is that breads, pastas, and other starchy foods are fattening. This just isn’t so! These foods are all rich sources of nutrients, and are among the lowest calorie foods available. It’s the fats that we add to these low calorie foods that. make them fattening: the butter on your bread, the sour cream on your potatoes, and the creamy sauces with your pasta. Most people get their dietary information from* TV, radio, their daily newspaper, and from friends ‘and co- workers. Few people consult registered dieticians. The thing is, nutritional beliefs change through the decades. The Back-To-Nature maavement of the 60s em- phasized whole grains and ad- ditive free foods, Sugar was labelled ‘white death” and fish would kill you with it’s mercury poisoning. In the seventies, protein rich diets were-popular,. despite their high fat: content... The. eighties brought: “the quest for the perfect figure. This brought on a starve and splurge approach to weight. loss, Now. you could add artificial sweetener to your coffee, with a doughnut alongside. Red meat was out, and chicken and fish were back in. _ Now inthe 90s, convenience and freshness are the buzz words. We know that sugar can cause tooth decay, but not hyperactivity, cancer, or crime. Red meat is leaner now than it was even ten years ago (about - 50% leaner), so it’s a healthy source of nutrients like iron, B.. vitamins, and protein. Scientific - research has shown us all foods | -- can be healthy, if we eat them i in| . moderation. So where does it all lead? | What do we pay attention to? What should we be eating??? | The first thing that we need to . do is get rid of the concept of “so0d" versus ‘bad’ foods. There is room for all foods in any diet, The key is moderation and balance, Choose a variety. of foods. Just choose some foods less often. Starch and fibre provide healthy benefits, and may. reduce the risk of colon cancer, So choose foods like pastas, cereals, grains, bananas, yams, rice, and dried peas.and beans. Consume an assortment of different col- oured fruits and vegetables. You'll get a healthy serving of starch and fibre from these foods, plus vitamins and minerals. -Complex car- _ bohydrate foods make weight control easier, too. The calories from starch and other car- bohydrates are not as efficiently _ stored as fat-calories. ’ Choose lower fat dairy items, -and leaner meats. Be a fat detec- tive. Watch for fats in the ingre- ‘dient lists of crackers, cookies, desserts, dressings and sauces. Make sauces with skim milk, not whole milk or cream, and use low fat cottage cheese (pureed in the blender) or yoghurt instead of sour cream. But don't eliminate fat altogether! Our bodies need it to provide energy and absorb. Vitamins A, D, and BE. Choose smaller portions of meat, poultry and fish. There’s nothing wrong with occasional ‘junk’ foods, so. long as they’re not replacing the more . nutritious foods in your diet. Relax. and enjoy your food. Shop for your foods based on their labels, and compare the nutrient values of several similar foods. The Reading Place. will receive $570 to go towards new tables and chairs, says rotary club vice-president Ed Graydon. He said the club is also giving $300 to the Terrace and District Community Services Society for the local chapter of Friends of Schizophrenics..
