ents opty tenn emma eT B6 Terrace Review — Wednesday, February 27, 1991 ALL-NATIVE | BASKETBALL TROPHIES MOVE TO NEW Masset, Musqueam win divisions They had no ‘repeat’ champ- ions in either division of this year’s annual All-Native Basket- ball Tournament. New faces dominate the official winners’ photographs, with both top squads taking first-place hard- ware away from mainiand B.C. The intermediate’s 12-team -section saw the Queen Charlotte Island’s Masset entry sail home with the marbles, while Van- couver Island’s Musqueam went south with the 32nd annual senior title. Musqueam went through as | the only undefeated squad on their double-knockout side, and beat out defending champion Metlakatla, Alaska 98-87 in the championship match. Musqueam began on day one with a 95-6] win over Nisga’a. For their second win, they out- scored the local Trojans 101-93. Game three was an 85-74 vic- tory over Kitamaat, followed by the ‘A’ side final — an exciting 115-109 win against Metlakatla. That pushed the defending champs to ‘B’ side, where they downed ‘B’ side winning Kincol- ith 118-82 in the semi-final. This win gave Méetlakatla another _ shot at the title, but they ran out of steam and had to settle for se- cond best. Masset took the intermediate crown the hard way. They had to win five straight on ‘B’ side after an opening game loss. In only the second game of the tourney’s 44-game schedule, Masset dropped a 73-70 decision ‘to Kitamaat — meaning they’d need a long win streak to make the final. Masset gathered forces and got hot — they whipped Terrace 79.64, dumped Rupert Cubs 98-61, nipped Metlakatla 74-73, then won ‘B’ side 80-63 over Port Simpson. ° Kincolith, meanwhile, cruised along with a bye and three wins in a row to win ‘A’ side. They outscored Kitamaat 67-66, downed Metlakatla 109-83 and edged Bella Bella 95-94 for their ‘A?’ side triumph. ‘Kincolith couldn’t muster the troops up for charging Masset and had to settle for second place on a slim 79-78 margin. .‘A’ side. finalist Bella Bella had a crack at regaining a shot at Kincolith, but lost the semi-final 98-74 to Masset. -Each division awarded 10 all- star berths and other awards here’s the list for each section. 7.” INTERMEDIATE ZAIStars: Gary Edgar (Bella Goula),-Jason Parnell (Massct), Riissell- Mather (Port Simpson), Mitch Martin (Bella Bella), HOMES Quannah Lecorue (Masset), Curtis Schmidt (Kitamaat), Ralph Bright (Kincolith), Dave Hull (Masset), Mike Ridsdale {Kitamaat), Mike Reid (Bella Bella). .
