— Canada SAGE peace trekkers | launch new newsletter By MICHAEL JONES Tee years ago, four Montreal high School students took a year off school to travel across Canada talking to other stu- dents about the threat of nuclear war. What they learned wasa story of fear: three out of four students believed that a nuclear war would occur in their lifetime — some had €ven considered not having families because of these apprehensions. The tour over, the four, known as SAGE (Students Against Global Extermination) wanted to continue the dialogue they began with their peers and The Paper Crane, a quarterly newsletter for youth and students, was launched. The name originates with the story of Sadako Sasaki, a young Japanese girl who phillip ellen rankin bond paul mcmurray Barristers & Solicitors 157 Alexander Street 2nd floor Vancouver, B.C. A Japanese legend holds that if one makes 1,000 cranes out of paper, the gods will grant their wish. Sadako began folding cranes, but died with only 640 completed. Her friends folded the rest, and they buried Sadako with 1,000 cranes. The paper crane has since become an international symbol of hope for youth in the nuclear age. This hope is evident in the newsletter’s approach. It aims to show students that peace is possible in today’s world. Through a fundamental belief in our democratic sys- tem, The Paper Crane aims to eliminate the pessimism in today’s youth. Instead of pres- enting disarmament as an issue that is too large and complex to handle, it offers con- crete ways in which individuals and groups of students can do to bring about a peaceful world. “We recognize that young people had little to do with creating these problems, but have everything to do with the solutions,” says editor Kelly McDowell. “As students become more active, their confidence and competence soars, positively affecting all aspects of their lives. Young people no longer. have to sit back and watch their futures dwindle in the nuclear shadow.” An annual subscription to The Paper Crane (four issues) is $10.
