New peace society
founded in Victoria

VICTORIA, B.C. — The Society for Peace by Peaceful
Means -—— that’s the name the founding members have chosen
for a new peace organization established here last week. And
chief among its purposes are the promotion of “any activity
which will improve relationships between nations” and the “re-
nunciation of war-as an instrument of national policy.”

Pending election of officers,
Mrs. Rosemary Hamilton,
chairman of the constitution-
al committee, is spokesman
for the new society,

“We want to overcéme the
fear in. people’s minds that
they will be called fellow
travellers if they speak out
for peace. Above all, we want
to combat the general feeling
of helplessness people have—
the feeling they can do nothing
to prevent a suicidal war,”
she said in a statement to the
press explaining why she and
11 others had decided to form
the organization.

Glen, Hamilton who presided
at the inaugural meeting last
week, said that membership
would be open to persons of
any race or creed who sub-
scribed to the society’s princi-
ples. He explained that some
members of the founding
group were - pacifists, others
were not, but all shared one
belief—“that war is no longer
tolerable and that meeting
threat with threat and bomb
with super-bomb is leading
us on to war.”

The much advocated princi-
ple of amassing superior force
as a deterrent to war, he
added, was completely false.

Aims of the society as de-
fined at the meeting will be:

©@ To assist in coordinating
to exercise their right to
the activities of groups and
individuals working for peace
by peaceful means.

® To initiate and promote
any activity which will im-
prove relationships between
nations, and to “disseminate
information. relating to the

issues of peace and war.

® To work towards renun-
ciation of war as an instru-
ment of national policy and to
study and debate alternatives.

® To encourage individual
freedom of thought, speech
and action, :

Although the society will
restrict its activities largely
to Greater Victoria, it intends
to communicate with persons
across the country . whose
names it has compiled from
letters on peace written to
newspapers.

election of officers.

VICTORIA, B.C. — Ship-
building and repair jin the
capital, which once employed
thousands of men, is rapidly
becoming a ghost industry.

Trade union leaders are
warning that Victoria ship-
yards will soon be crippled by
a lack of skilled workers ‘un-
less these yards get some ship-
building contracts soon.

Boilermakers’ and. machin-
ists’ union officials here state
that scores of skilled shipyard
workers “are heading east and
south trying to find work,’
With many heading for US.
shipbuilding ‘centres because
there shipbuilding “is highly
subsidized by the U.S. govern-
ment.”

Officials of the Marine Work-
ers in Vancouver told the Pa-
cific Tribune this week that
although the situation in Van-
couver shipyards was not as
serious as in Victoria, “if new
orders don’t come in, it soon
will be.”

be settled through negotia-
ticns between the two coun-
tries which are now being held -
in Warsaw.

“There is nq war between
the « People’s Republic of
China and the U.S., and so the
question of a cease-fire does
not. arise.

“Friends in Formosa, there
are flames of war between us. .
They should be stopped and
extinguished. To achieve this,
talks are needed. Of course,
it would not matter so much
even if the fighting should
continue for another 30 years.
It is however, better to secure
an early peaceful settlement.
The choice is up to you.”
