AS you undoubtedly know, the Vancouver Symphony has faced a
crisis in recent months. The organization was on the verge of
collapse in January, when Mayor Campbell announced a Symphony
Recovery Task Force chaired by Larry Bell, CEO of B.C. Hydro.
This task force reported that the Symphony could be saved
provided a series of strong measures were enacted. A new board
for the society was appointed on April 26, 1988. We have managed
to obtain a 5 year contract with musicians, increased levels of
funding from senoir levels of government and the corporate sector
through the "Symphony Fund", an exciting new concert schedule,
and we have conducted two detailed market analyses which will
guide us in developing our ticket sales strategy for the fall of
1988. The proposal in bankruptcy was agreed to by all creditors
2O that today the Symphony is debt free,

We are embarking upon an exciting year in which we hepe to bring
the Symphony much closer to the citizens of British Columbia.
Our first efforts have been an inaugural concert at the Canada
Day celebrations July ist and, of course, the spectacular
performance on a barge as part of Sea Festival on July 13th. A
provincial tour is planned for the spring.

I am writing to you and your Council with two requests. Firstly,
we would like you to consider opportunities within your
municipality in which the Symphony might visit and perform,
whether it be in a concert setting, a series of small ensembles
Or appearances at local schools. We may not be able. to meet
every request, as the costs of the Symphony are obviosly quite
high, but we do intend to perform ina number of venues other
than the Orpheum Theatre this year. We welcome your suggestions.
