SCHIZOPHRENIA is not what

you think,

". Schizophrenia is a neurologoli-

cal disease, the result of physical
and biochemical changes in the
brain. It’s youth’s greatest dis-
abler, Age of onset is usually 17-

_.29 years. Schizophrenia is usually

treatable with medication, and is
more common than you think. It
afflicts 1 in 100  peopte
worldwide — over 35,000 of
your B.C. neighbors.

Schizophrenia is not a split per-
sonality, and is not caused by
childhood trauma, parents, or
poverty, It is not the result of any
actions or personal failures of the
individual.

Schizophrenia is a devastating
mental illness whose major symp-
toms are caused by a chemical
imbalance in the brain. It is a
complex disarder which defies
easy description, but here are
some of the ways in which it
strikes: hallucinations (secing or
hearing things that are not there);
delusions {irrational beliefs); flat-
ness of emotions; and bizarre be-
havior, including inappropriate
sexual and/or social behavior.

Onc in every 100 of the general
population, or 1 in 10 if you have
a relative with the illness, are af-

fected with symptoms that usual-
ly begin in the teenage years,

Schizophrenia can often be con-
tolled with antipsychotic drugs.
However, the exact cause of the
illness is unknown, and the cure
is yet to be found.

inexplicable moods, | anxious
Without observable reason, they
Struggle to make sense of dis-
ordered thoughis and internal
voices." -

Schizophrenia is frequently ac-
companied by another group of
symptoms, characterized by with-
drawal, lack of motivation, and
loss of coping skills, People with
schizophrenia are often rejected
by friends and family who simply
do not understand.
