River trip provides trio © with a scary experience _ TERRACE -— What was to be a quiet afternoon canoe trip on the river turned into something quite different. Two men and a 14-year-old boy decided to take a canoe from Lakelse Lake down the Lakelse River to the Skeena on Sunday, © Aug, 1. . The out-of-town trio’ was un: ” aware that .the meandering Lakelse ~- which looks like a pleasant float from maps — is in fact choked with log jams that make a canoe trip on the river a gruelling slog of many portages. “They had no idea what the river situation was going to be,” sald Tony Toriglia of the Terrace Water Rescue Team. The water rescue team was called out. around 9 p.m. that ‘night after the canocists failed to return on .time in _ the late afternoon. : . At about 2 am. the. team lo- cated .the trio about. four kilo- metres upstream from the bridge where they planned to end their _ trip. ; _‘©We found them in a back eddy slough,”’ Toriglia said. They had lost all of their gear but one small pack, he said, and were going around in. circles irying unsuccessfully to navigate their way out of the slough. Toriglia said the boy was mild- ly hypothermic, but they were otherwise unhurt. “When we got 10 them we had to bushwack about a thousand” metres. to the logging. road and then we had to walk back down to the truce’ ‘They were scared and cold and glad to be home,”” he added. Toriglia said the incident is a good example of the need to get as much information as possible about conditions before setting out, “Once you're it in one of these ~ creeks or rivers you’re committed — you can’t get back out,” he said. ‘‘And they change every year, You never know what's: around the next comer.’’ He commended the group for leaving a trip plan behind and in- forming friends when they were expecting to return. Fortunately, he said, it was a warm night with a full moon. “Given a different -environ- ment, it could have turned out very tragic,”’ he sald, Tat river slated for nomination TERRACE — A month after the NDP declared their intention to make the Tatshenshini a provin- cial park, John Cashore said the Tat River will be nominated to the Canadian Heritage Rivers System (CHRS), The environment, parks and lands minister made the announc- ement at the end of July. . “Goverment wants to ensure that we recognize and protect our rivers, and joining CHRS is an important step in this direction,”’ he said. The Tat river will be nominated when B.C. joins the national pro- gram later this year. Cashore made the announce- ment on the recommendations of an eight-member committee he appointed last year. The group consists of native, business, con- servation and government inter- ests that examined B.C.’s partici- pation in the CHRS. Nominations from across Cana- da will be submitted to the com-. mittee in December. According to a recent sutvey from the Outdoor Recreation Council of B.C., the Tatshenshini river is the most endangered river in the province.
