That security of supply is necessary if Skeena Cellulose is to build a chipper in the Cariboo, said Ogawa. . He said the company can’t commit to building the chipper and investing other monies bas- ed solely on purchasing fibre on the open market. Skeena Cellulose says there’s been 300,000 and 400,000 cubic metres of fibre a year produced by’ other companies in the ‘Cariboo that is now going to waste. The company’s contemplated Port Edward expansion will re- quire 1.98 million cubic metres a year of pulp fibre. Ogawa said the company is still searching for that amount. A forests ministry decision on the Cariboo pulp proposals is expected in the spring. Kak kk In the meantime, the com- pany is preparing an application for a second pulpwood agree- ment. This one covers the nor- thwest and would provide a guaranteed supply, if needed, of up to 623,000 cubic metres of pulpwood for 25 years.. To date it’s been criticized by the Hazelton village council and the Gitksan and Wet’suwet’en of the Hazeltons.
