Dr. Peter Newbery, the director of United Church Health Services and based in Hazellon, says nolhwest hospilals aad health care agencies are already talking. His appointment follows a sludy on norlhwest~ health’ care «~ released last Novernber. It stated moucy could be saved aud services improved if there was more co-operation and co- ordination between the three norlhwest cities. “There are. opportunities to see us as a region.and not as a dis- parate collection of communities along Hwy16,’’ said Newbery last week, Newbery was named as the in- terim regional co-ordinator Jan, 6, He'll stay on until the spring when a permanent one is hired. The interim co-ordinator posi- tion comes from a recommenda- tion of the study. Newbery said he’s looking for- ward to talking with hospitals and health care agencies. And he’s also anticipating nail- ing down his exact job descrip- tion and that of the permanent co- ordinator. Newbery has been director of the United Church Health Service for [5 years. His responsibility is doctors and medical staff in the Hazeltons, Bella Colla and Bella Bella. Although the permanent co- ordinator may come from outside Gov't studies _ sand complaints TERRACE — Every year it’s the same — cracked windshields during winter driving from sand spread for traction. But this winter, the size of the nalerial used is the subject of a study being conducled by the highways ministry, ICBC and RCMP. It was -ordered by highways minister Art Charbonneau follow- ing an increase in cracked wind- shield complaints and in insur- ance claims made. “Tam uncertain as to whether there is a direct relationship be- tween ihe size of ihe aggregate and windshield replacement. claims, but I am asking ...1o0 see . if the two are related,’” said Char- bonneau. ; ICBC statistics indicate the number of windshield claims has risen ‘significantly: over the past three years. The corporation paid out $49.3 wnillion in 1990, rising to $56.:7 million last year and to $47, 1 inillion to the end of November this year, a The 1992 -figure looks lower and that’s. probably due to a-10 aohetcent.xeduction.in:.glass, cos ICBC has been able to negotiate © with suppliers. He said the ministry is taking samples of aggregate and having them tested throughout the winter, And while drivers may wonder why the sand mixture contains large pieces, Penner sald that’s to ensure there is enough abrasion to make winter driving safer. “On highways, if we used stnaller sizes, it could: be blown away by large irucks,”’ be said. the region, Newbery said there is an advantage to having someone name from the northwest for now, “As a family doctor and part of a group of six doctors bere, I've had a long association with Ter- race and Kitimat hospitals and know something of the dif- ficultics of organizing health care in the northwest,”’ be said. Newbery also took part in dis- cussions several years ago for ant- other northwest health care review, Action on that review was Sidelined but with the latest review and budget cuts have given hospitals an impetus to. change things, he said. “Some additional specialty ser- vices would mean patients wouldn't have to go south for nearly everything,’? Newbery pointed out. He noted that the report of last year’s health care review sug- gested that the budget woes of some norihwest hospitals — in- chiding Mills Memorial — could be solved by changing manage- ment practices. The report indicated thal the money we are receiving in the ~ northwest should be sufficient but it pointed to the fact that there are: better ways of managing the money,”’ he said. ‘For example it pointed out that patient stay in hospitals in the northwest seems to be longer than average.”” ““WhatI suspect is that it is not fully appreciated ... that a lot of our patients come from very dis- tant communilics.
